"There was technology before transfer." If we only look for the factors behind Genesis's success in design, it is no different from not understanding the far side of the moon.
Genesis brand (hereafter Genesis) released a promotional video titled "Technology by GENESIS" on the 7th that showcases the excellence of key technologies applied to Genesis models. The video introduces various technologies of Genesis like a movie, showing how a comfortable travel experience is implemented through these technologies.
The technologies featured in the video include multi-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering system (RWS), 3.5T 48V electric supercharger, electronic limited-slip differential (E-LSD), active noise control (ANC-R), and sports plus mode—six representative technologies mounted on Genesis internal combustion engine vehicles. The video allows viewers to understand the operating principles and effects of each technology.
The multi-chamber air suspension, which realizes graceful driving sensations, adjusts ride comfort and handling performance according to the situation through active control.
The multi-chamber air suspension applied to Genesis absorbs vibrations and shocks using air springs instead of traditional coil springs, and it consists of multiple chambers (spaces for storing air) that adjust the characteristics of the air spring and control the vehicle's height depending on the driving mode and conditions.
For example, before entering a speed bump, the height of the vehicle and the damping force of the suspension are adjusted to improve ride comfort, and during uphill driving, the focus is on maintaining balance. Additionally, when rough terrain is detected, the ground clearance is raised to prevent bottom damage, while on highways, the vehicle's height is lowered to enhance high-speed stability. The multi-chamber air suspension can also adjust handling characteristics through air spring stiffness control.
When the steering angle sensor detects a situation where handling performance is needed, it rapidly compresses only the air inside the main chamber to strongly support the vehicle body, inhibiting lateral tilt and enabling sharp handling.
The rear-wheel steering system actively controls the steering angle of the rear wheels in conjunction with the front wheels to reduce the turning radius of long wheelbase vehicles, allowing for more agile driving. During low-speed driving, the rear wheels can turn in the opposite direction (counter-phase) to the front wheels by up to 4° (based on G90) to reduce the turning radius and assist in maneuvering during U-turns and parking.
Also, at high speeds, the rear wheels are steered within a range of 2° in the same direction (in-phase) as the front wheels to suppress the phenomenon of skidding, thereby improving turning stability during high-speed cornering and emergency avoidance.
The 3.5 Turbo 48V electric supercharger provides a more relaxed driving performance by combining a mild hybrid system with 48V and an electric supercharger with the existing V6 3.5 turbo engine, improving driving performance, responsiveness, fuel efficiency, and emissions.
The 3.5 Turbo 48V electric supercharger quickly increases the air pressure supplied to the engine cylinders using the electric supercharger operating under the 48V power system at low RPMs below 1,750 rpm, reducing turbo lag by about 53% when pressing the accelerator and enhancing the engine's responsiveness.
In addition, at high RPMs, a large turbocharger increases the air pressure supplied to the engine cylinders, generating high output, and by equipping it with a water-cooled intercooler suitable for large turbochargers, it ensures efficient cooling even under high load and high-temperature conditions. Based on this, the 3.5 Turbo 48V electric supercharger achieves a maximum output of 415 horsepower (PS) and maximum torque of 56.0 kgf·m, providing exceptional acceleration.
Additionally, the 48V power system, which operates at four times the voltage of the existing 12V system, can more easily drive the electric supercharger or starter motor that requires high-speed rotation, helping to improve fuel efficiency and reduce engine load.
The electronic limited-slip differential actively adjusts the rotational differences between the left and right wheels, enabling bolder driving with optimal traction.
The limited-slip differential (LSD) is a device that enhances driving stability and extraction performance by transmitting power to the wheel with lower rotational speed when the friction of the left and right wheels differs, with types categorized into mechanical and electronic.
The electronic limited-slip differential mounted in Genesis vehicles controls the power distribution more actively than mechanical types. This allows drivers to experience a more agile and smooth driving experience while making it easier to escape from rough terrain. For example, when one wheel of the vehicle gets stuck in mud or sand, the electronic limited-slip differential detects the rotational differences between the left and right wheels and appropriately distributes power through hydraulic actuators and multi-plate clutches, helping the vehicle to easily escape from rough terrain.
Additionally, Genesis has equipped its SUV models with an auto terrain mode, allowing for optimal performance in various driving environments. When activating the auto terrain mode, the artificial intelligence system detects the road surface automatically based on actual driving data and pre-trained data acquired through multiple sensors, automatically setting the appropriate driving mode among normal roads, snowy roads, muddy roads, and sandy roads to implement optimal driving performance.
The active noise control, which provides a serene driving experience, is a technology that generates sound waves in the opposite phase of road noise to effectively reduce noise.
Active noise control utilizes four accelerometers installed near the vehicle tires and eight microphones installed in the vehicle interior to measure and analyze road noise in real time. It generates opposing phase sound waves through the audio speakers, damping the noise before occupants can perceive it. This effectively suppresses low-frequency noise in the 20-250Hz range, such as bump noises from old asphalt surfaces, bridge consolidations, and shock-induced booming noises, enhancing the cabin's quietness.
The sports plus mode delivers a powerful and dynamic driving sensation by controlling engine torque, shift patterns, suspension damping force, and steering effort to create a sportier driving feel.
In particular, the sports plus mode controls the shift pattern to optimize the gear ratio for dynamic driving under various driving conditions. After rapid acceleration, during sudden braking, it quickly shifts down to prepare for explosive acceleration again, and during cornering, it minimizes unnecessary shifting to help the vehicle move more agilely and precisely. Additionally, when the driver activates the sports plus mode, an active sound design (ASD) is applied to emphasize mid-bass sounds, maximizing the fun of driving.
A Genesis spokesperson noted, "Genesis is constantly striving to develop driving technology that encompasses comfort, dynamism, and emotion, and we will provide customers with the best travel experience through technology that reduces the effort of driving and adds convenience to the journey."
