Tottenham Hotspur announced its fourth signing of the summer transfer window and is reportedly still targeting Brentford's star striker Yoane Wissa (29, Brentford).
The British 'Evening Standard' reported on the 11th (Korean time) that "Tottenham remains interested in signing Wissa, and Brentford rejected an offer from Nottingham Forest, estimated at £20 million (about 37.2 billion won)." Nottingham previously made an offer of approximately £22 million (about 40.9 billion won) last January but was unsuccessful. This latest proposal was lower than the previous one, and understandably, the door to Brentford remains closed.
Wissa started as a winger at Brentford but transformed into a striker after the absence of Ivan Toney. During his time as a winger, he primarily executed cut-in plays from the left side, relying on his speed and explosive dribbling. After transitioning to a striker, he has shown strengths in off-the-ball movement, penetrating behind defenses, and goal-scoring ability.
He is not very large but actively participates in aerial battles and pressing based on his solid physique and jumping ability. In the past, during his time as a winger, he struggled with pressing and lacked coordination and judgment, but these weaknesses have significantly improved recently. Notably, from the 2024-2025 season onward, he has shown clear growth in link-up play and adaptability to team tactics.
Tottenham was one of the clubs that inquired about signing Wissa this summer. Brentford has communicated that they want at least £50 million (about 93 billion won), and there has been no contact between the two clubs for two weeks. However, the 'Evening Standard' emphasized that "Tottenham's interest in Wissa remains valid."
Tottenham has already converted the loan signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Kevin Danso into permanent transfers and has signed promising Japanese defender Gotaku Takai for £5 million (about 9.2 billion won). Mohamed Kudus was also brought in from West Ham for £55 million (about 102.3 billion won). Additionally, it is reported that Morgan Gibbs-White's buyout of £60 million (about 111.6 billion won) is activated and he is awaiting a medical test, but this transaction has temporarily been halted due to Nottingham's dissatisfaction.
Tottenham has already spent a large sum in this transfer window but remains active in seeking further reinforcements.
Wissa became Brentford's top scorer in the Premier League last season, scoring 19 goals, excluding penalties. His combination play with Bryan Mbeumo was particularly impressive. The two players were directly or indirectly involved in 39 of the team's total 66 goals. Mbeumo is attracting interest from Manchester United this summer, which has already raised its bid to about £62 million (about 115.4 billion won) and is considering a third offer.
According to reports, Brentford has established a principle internally that they cannot send both players simultaneously, but acknowledged that they could change their stance if an astronomical offer comes in. Coach Thomas Frank has already moved to Tottenham, and captain Christian Nørgaard has transferred to Arsenal.
As key assets at Brentford are being taken by big Premier League clubs one after another, Wissa is also unable to escape Tottenham's radar.
