Son Heung-min (33) is increasingly likely to part ways with Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The Spurs Web, which primarily covers Tottenham news, reported on the 2nd (Korea time) that "four players from Tottenham (Son Heung-min, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur) have entered the final year of their contracts. They are under interest from clubs in Europe and the Middle East, and their futures are uncertain. The club has reached a point where it must make a significant decision," said the source.
Since joining Tottenham in 2015, Son Heung-min has played a total of 454 matches and scored 173 goals and provided 101 assists over 10 years. However, there are analyses suggesting he has entered the aging curve for the 2024-2025 season.
Last season, Son Heung-min recorded only 7 goals and 10 assists in the league. His streak of double-digit goals for eight consecutive seasons came to an end. Nevertheless, he led Tottenham to victory in the Europa League, lifting the club's first trophy. This means he has achieved everything he wanted at the club.
Many analyses suggest that now is the right time for Tottenham and Son Heung-min to part ways beautifully.
Tottenham has stated that they respect Son Heung-min's wishes. If Son requests a transfer, the club will not force him to stay.
Currently, Son Heung-min's contract with Tottenham runs until June 2026.
Matt Law from The Telegraph stated on the Tottenham fan podcast Last Word on Spurs that "Son has left an impression internally that he played his last game for Tottenham."
Alasdair Gold from Football London also shared a similar view. He noted that "Son is more open to the possibility of a transfer than in previous years. If the right offer comes, both the club and the player will consider a transfer."
If Son Heung-min leaves, a replacement has already been identified. Football London predicts that "Tey is the most likely candidate to be the regular on the left wing. If Solomon continues his performance from Leeds, he could strengthen the squad. Mikey Moore may also be given a chance."
Tottenham plans to respect Son Heung-min's choice. According to reports, the club intends to follow his decision rather than push for a sale.
In the meantime, Son Heung-min is being connected to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.
Football London reported on the 30th of last month that "MLS and Saudi Arabian clubs are showing interest in acquiring Son Heung-min."
The United States is the host country for the 2026 North America World Cup. Recently, the soccer market in the U.S. has been rapidly growing. If Son continues his playing career in the U.S., it could serve as a meaningful step for his final World Cup.
If Son Heung-min joins MLS, he will become the ninth South Korean player to play in the top division of American soccer. Previously, Hong Myung-bo, Lee Young-pyo, Hwang In-beom, Kim Moon-hwan, Kim Ki-hee, Kim Jun-hong, Jung Sang-bin, and Jung Ho-yeon have experienced the MLS stage.
If Son Heung-min heads to the American league, he may frequently cross paths with global football legend Lionel Messi (38, Inter Miami).
The BBC reported on the 2nd that "MLS Inter Miami is confident in renewing a contract with Messi, whose current contract expires in December."
Messi is considering staying in the U.S. as he has the North America World Cup in mind while wearing the Argentina jersey.
