Lee Kang-in of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich will face off in a 'Korean derby' in the quarterfinals of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, provided that Kim returns from injury.
On the 30th (Korea time), PSG recorded a thorough 4-0 victory against Inter Miami in the round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Lee was substituted in at the 25th minute of the second half and contributed to the team’s victory.
On the same day, Bayern secured their place in the quarterfinals by defeating Flamengo 4-2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Kim Min-jae missed the match due to injury.
The two teams will compete in the quarterfinals on July 6 at 1 a.m. at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
PSG scored the opening goal just 6 minutes into the match, with Neves finishing off a free kick from Vitinha with a header.
Building on their momentum, PSG added another goal in the 39th minute of the first half. Neves, receiving a pass from Fabian Ruiz, scored to register a multi-goal match. They also benefited from an own goal in the 44th minute.
With a goal from Achraf Hakimi added in stoppage time of the first half, PSG concluded the half leading 4-0.
Inter Miami did not attempt a single shot throughout the first half. Messi recorded two shots on target in the second half, but both were unsuccessful. Notably, a header attempted from straight in front of the penalty area in the 35th minute was saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Lee attempted a left-footed shot in stoppage time of the second half, but it was blocked by the defensive wall. He did not register any attacking points but completed all 19 of his passes, achieving a pass success rate of 100%.
Bayern took the lead just 6 minutes into the first half due to an opponent's own goal. Three minutes later, Kane added to that with a long-range left-footed shot, leading the game 2-0.
Flamengo responded with a goal from Gerson in the 33rd minute of the first half, but Bayern pulled ahead again with a goal from Goretzka in the 41st minute.
In the 55th minute, Flamengo narrowed the gap with a penalty, which Jorgeinho converted after a handball foul by Olise.
However, Bayern confirmed their advancement to the quarterfinals when Kane received a pass from Kimmich and scored with a right-footed shot in the 28th minute of the second half, winning 4-2.
Kim Min-jae has missed four consecutive matches in this tournament, including the group stage, due to the lingering effects of an Achilles injury.
