Commissioner Lee Sang-yoon publicly apologized for inappropriate remarks made towards a foreign player during a K League match.

Commissioner Lee posted a handwritten apology on his social media account on the 28th.

During the K League match between Jeonbuk and Gimcheon held on the 27th, he used the expression "Italian bomber, flat-nosed guy" while commenting on Jeonbuk striker Compagno (Italy). The term "flat-nosed guy" contains racist connotations.

The remarks quickly spread online shortly after the broadcast. Many football fans perceived it as racism and raised their voices in criticism.

In his apology, the Commissioner said, "I sincerely apologize to the Jeonbuk players, Compagno, and all foreign players in the K League. I realize late that my words hurt and could be interpreted as racist, regardless of my intentions."

The broadcasting company Sky Sports also issued an apology via its social media account. The production team stated, "We feel a strong sense of responsibility for the Commissioner’s inappropriate remarks," and added, "We sincerely apologize to Compagno and the fans and viewers who love the K League."

Full text of the apology

First of all, I sincerely apologize for the discomfort caused by my inappropriate remarks. I have disappointed fans who were enjoying football on a weekend evening. I bow my head in apology.

I especially apologize deeply to the Jeonbuk Hyundai players and Compagno. Additionally, I sincerely express my apologies to all foreign players competing in the K League.

After the goal scene, I used inappropriate expressions while praising the player's skills in an excited state. Although it was not a phrase I normally use, it was a comment that came out in a moment of emotion.

I deeply realize that my remarks, regardless of intention, could hurt viewers and be interpreted in a racist context. I have lived with foreign colleagues during my playing days and have communicated with players of various nationalities as a coach.

However, I fully understand that such personal experiences do not diminish my responsibility for this verbal gaffe.

This incident has prompted me to reflect on my use of language, and I will study more deeply about the history and meaning of racist expressions and the risks of words that can be used thoughtlessly. I will be thoroughly vigilant and careful to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.

To all football fans and viewers who may have been disappointed by my shortcomings, I apologize once again.

In the future, I will approach my duties with more caution and responsibility. Thank you.
