The commentator who repeatedly made derogatory remarks about Novak Djokovic (38, Serbia) has ultimately been expelled.

The British 'Daily Mail' reported on the 23rd (Korean time) that Australian broadcaster 'Channel 9' has excluded veteran anchor Tony Jones from the lineup while assembling the local commentary team in London for the 2025 Wimbledon tennis tournament, which opens in the UK at the end of this month.

'Channel 9' plans to utilize the London bureau for this tournament and intends to send local experts such as Todd Woodbridge, Alicia Molik, Sam McClure, and Jelena Dokic to handle the broadcasts.

However, Jones was excluded from the Wimbledon tennis tournament commentary due to a statement made during the Australian Open in January. During a live broadcast, Jones said to Djokovic and his fans, "Novak is overrated. It's over now. Get him out," adding, "Fortunately, they couldn't hear me, which is a relief."

At that time, Djokovic expressed that he felt "disrespected" and announced he would completely refuse interviews with 'Channel 9' until a public apology was made.

In response, Jones acknowledged his mistake, saying, "If I could turn back time, of course, anyone can have hindsight, but it is clear where I crossed the line. It was the last word after a conversation with the audience, the word 'get him out.'"

He continued, "That phrase, no matter how it is wrapped, inevitably evokes the incident during the COVID-19 pandemic when Djokovic was deported (over the vaccine issue)," and he stated, "I now clearly understand that it angered Djokovic."

He added, "It was an unfortunate and uncomfortable situation. It certainly caused personal pain for Djokovic, and the same goes for me," and noted, "But I believe it’s time to focus on tennis again."

'Channel 9' also said, "We apologize for causing discomfort to Djokovic and his fans due to remarks made during a recent live broadcast," adding, "There was no intention to cause any harm."

The issue even escalated into a diplomatic matter. Lada Stepanovic, the Serbian Ambassador to Australia, stated, "There has never been a precedent where Australian media or officials have publicly insulted Serbian athletes in this way," expressing strong concerns.

Meanwhile, Djokovic is set to challenge Roger Federer's all-time record of 8 wins at Wimbledon this year. He is also aiming for his 25th major title.
