"Commissioner" Shin Gi-sung has started to contribute his talents.
The Cheonan Ssangyong High School basketball team, coached by Park Sang-o, invited Shin Gi-sung, a basketball commentator for SPOTV, as a guest coach on the 19th. Commissioner Shin is a legend who led the former TG Sambo, the predecessor of Wonju DB, to victory during his active career. Since the time of the Korea University basketball festival in the 1990s, Commissioner Shin has led the golden age of Korean basketball and earned the nickname "the bullet guy" for his unprecedented speed.
In 2019, Shin Gi-sung stepped down as the head coach of Shinhan Bank and has been actively working as a commentator. After transforming into a coach, he grabbed a basketball after a long time but showed no signs of awkwardness. He generously shared his know-how with younger players.
Modern basketball is increasingly breaking down positional boundaries. Guards are also valued for their power, and centers must be able to shoot three-pointers at will. Behind the flashy plays of professional players lies a solid foundation. Commissioner Shin focused on this point and thoroughly taught the players of Cheonan Ssangyong High School from the fundamentals.
The 14 players calmly learned basic skills such as core balance, dribbling, passing, and stepping in a step-by-step manner. The enthusiasm of the players, who wanted to learn even one more thing, was impressive. Commissioner Shin emphasized while demonstrating, "You must execute the movements accurately and think about why this training is necessary."
The ball-handling and defense drills conducted in pairs were very intense. As competition instincts sparked among the players, the training effects were multiplied. Commissioner Shin's clinic, which piqued the players' interest, received great responses from parents as well. He also showcased basic 2-on-2 and 3-on-3 drills commonly executed in professional settings. The players engaged in the clinic for two hours without rest, showing no signs of distraction.
Finally, Commissioner Shin generously imparted his quick-timing shooting skills, which were his signature moves during his active career, to the players. This is a move that allowed him to stand at the top of the professional league for 14 years. The players actively participated in the class, even asking questions.
Commissioner Shin noted, "I was amazed by the players' enthusiasm. I have seen many elite players, but the attitude and posture of the Cheonan Ssangyong High School players were very passionate, leaving a deep impression on me. I wanted to teach more, but I regret that the time was short. Instead, I learned a lot from the players."
"I was surprised that Park Sang-o, who played with me in the pros, has created such a good team. It’s nice to see a junior grow into a good coach. I want to teach amateur basketball players whenever I have the chance in the future," he added.
Park Sang-o commented, "It was a great stimulus for the players to have Commissioner Shin, whom I have respected since my professional days, watching over them."
Cheonan Ssangyong High School has gradually been achieving results, reaching the quarterfinals in the recent spring federation tournament. Commissioner Shin plans to consistently pass on his know-how to amateur players through future coaching clinics.
