A major upset occurred in the tournament.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG, France) lost 0-1 to Botafogo RJ (Brazil) on the 20th (Korean time) in the second round of Group B at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

After a 4-0 victory against Atletico in the first match, PSG was aiming for victory in this game as well. Lee Kang-in, who came on as a substitute in the last match, contributed to the win by scoring a goal with a penalty kick late in the second half.

PSG became the victim of the upset. Botafogo is a prestigious traditional club in Brazil, but the dominant evaluation was that PSG was stronger in terms of objective power. Failing to gain points in this match, PSG slid to second place in the group. In contrast, Botafogo climbed to first place with 6 points (2 wins).

PSG lined up in a 4-3-3 formation. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Gonçalo Hamus, and Dejiro Due were positioned at the forefront, while Warren Zaire-Emery, Seni Mayulu, and Vitinha occupied the midfield. Willian Pacho, Luka Hernández, Lucas Beraldo, and Achraf Hakimi formed the back four, with Gianluigi Donnarumma guarding the goal. Lee Kang-in started on the bench.

Botafogo faced PSG in a 4-1-4-1 formation. Igor Jesus was positioned at the front, while Heperson Sabarino, Gregory, Marlon Freitas, and Arthur Guimarães supported the attack from the second line. Allan protected the back four alone, and Alex Telles, Alexandar Barbosa, Jair Cunha, and Vitinho made up the defensive line. The goalkeeper's gloves were worn by John Victor.

PSG displayed the traits of a European champion. The attacking line, led by Khvicha, shook Botafogo's defense from the left, while full-back Hakimi continuously attempted attacks from the opposite side.

Instead, Botafogo scored the opening goal. In the 36th minute of the first half, Jesus received a forward pass from number 10, immediately penetrated the back space, controlled the ball, and concluded with a shot that found the net.

Six minutes of stoppage time was added in the first half. Khvicha disturbed the defense from the left and delivered a cross, but Barbosa cleared it. The first half ended with Botafogo in the lead.

PSG swallowed their disappointment. In the 6th minute of the second half, Vitinha took a free kick from the right side, and Hamus rushed in to attempt a header, but it went straight to goalkeeper Victor.

In the 10th minute of the second half, PSG, eager to score, used a substitution card. They called off Hamus, Zaire-Emery, Mayulu, and Hernández from the bench and brought on Nuno Mendes, Fabian Ruiz, João Neves, and Bradley Barcola.

PSG seemed to be turning the game back to square one. In the 34th minute of the second half, Barcola's right-foot shot crossed the goal line but was disallowed due to Khvicha's offside in the preceding situation.

In the 35th minute of the second half, PSG used their last substitution card, bringing in Lee Kang-in for Due. Afterward, Lee Kang-in took a corner kick but failed to convert it into a valid shot.

Six minutes of stoppage time were given, and Fabian Ruiz earned a free kick by falling in a good position in front of the box. Khvicha, taking the kick, delivered a sharp shot, but it went over the crossbar.

In the remaining time, PSG launched attacks in search of the equalizer. With one minute left in the match, Lee Kang-in had a shooting chance inside the box but was blocked by the goalkeeper's save. The match concluded with PSG losing 0-1.
