It seems the time is approaching for Son Heung-min (32), who has been the symbol of Tottenham Hotspur, to leave the team.
Under manager Thomas Frank, Son Heung-min has fallen from being a core resource to merely a 'variable'. Local media report that Manager Frank has virtually made strategic decisions concerning Son and is leaning towards the possibility of a transfer.
The Boy Hotspur stated on the 19th (Korean time) that 'Manager Frank has no immediate intention to send Son Heung-min away, but if he insists on staying, he should be prepared to spend time on the bench.' It continued, 'For 32-year-old Son Heung-min, a scenario limiting playing opportunities would mean wasting the end of his career. A transfer to a stage where he can showcase his skills would be the best option.'
Son Heung-min left a strong impression on the European stage last season. He was a key player in ending Tottenham's 17-year trophy drought by winning the UEFA Europa League, but in the Premier League, he lost his presence amid injuries and inconsistency.
As a result, voices within the club for a generational shift are growing louder.
The Boy Hotspur analyzed that 'Tottenham is seriously considering parting ways with Son Heung-min ahead of team rebuilding. It is now time to transition to a younger attacking lineup.'
Currently, the most realistic option for Son Heung-min's next destination is Saudi Arabia. ESPN reported, 'The Saudi Professional League is making all-out efforts to secure Asian superstars as part of its strategy for global market expansion, and Son Heung-min is at the center of that.'
The Times continued with similar reports. It mentioned, 'Saudi Arabian clubs have seen an increased value for Son Heung-min due to regulations requiring Asian nationals in the roster for participation in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League,' adding that 'Al Hilal and Al Nassr are aiming to recruit Son Heung-min.'
Son Heung-min also received a substantial offer from Saudi Arabia in 2023. Al Ittihad proposed a transfer fee of £55 million (102 billion won) and an annual salary of £25 million (46.3 billion won), but Son rejected it and remained with Tottenham. However, evaluations suggest that now, having achieved his goal of winning a trophy, his choices may change.
Tottenham's dedicated journalist Alasdair Gold said, 'Son Heung-min has stated in the past that the reason he has remained with Tottenham is 'to win'. Now that he has realized that dream, it is time to consider the next step. Now is the time for Son Heung-min to seriously consider a transfer.'
Of course, if Son Heung-min leaves, Tottenham will have to immediately suffer a weakening of their squad.
The Boy Hotspur warned, 'Currently, Tottenham's attacking line is lacking both in quantity and quality. If Son Heung-min departs, they must recruit resources equivalent to him.'
