Woosuk University will host the 14th Korea-China-Japan Visually Impaired Tennis Tournament from the 27th for two days at the Jeonju campus gymnasium.
The tournament is organized by the Korea Visually Impaired Tennis Association and coordinated by Woosuk University’s support center for disabled students and the special education department.
Around 300 people are expected to participate in the tournament, including players, coaches, and volunteers affiliated with visually impaired tennis associations from Korea, Japan, Singapore, Canada, as well as from Woosuk University, Jeonbuk School for the Blind, the Jeonbuk branch of the Korea Masseurs Association, and Chungju Sungmo School.
The games will be divided according to visual classification into B1, B2, B3, and B4 (men’s and women’s singles) and will proceed in the order of preliminary round (league), semifinals (tournament), and finals.
Visually impaired tennis started when Takeyoshi Miyoshi from Japan developed a special ball that makes noise, and it is currently being promoted in over 20 countries, including Korea, China, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Professor Jeong Jin-ja, who oversees the tournament operations, noted, “We will successfully hold this tournament to enhance the skills of visually impaired athletes and promote international exchange.”
Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of the tournament will be held on the 27th at 10 a.m. at the Jeonju campus gymnasium, attended by prominent figures such as Rha Jong-il, president of the Korea Visually Impaired Tennis Association, and a scholarship presentation ceremony for disabled students and international students will also take place.
