Florian Wirtz (22, Bayer Leverkusen) is on the verge of joining Liverpool. He is undergoing the medical TES.
Liverpool announced on the 20th (Korea time) through the club's official website, "Florian Wirtz arrives in England for Liverpool medical TES." They added, "A transfer is imminent at 116 million pounds (approximately 215.2 billion won)."
Wirtz, who will be Liverpool's 'new No. 10', is already a proven top talent in the Bundesliga. He made his debut at Bayer 04 Leverkusen at just 17 years old, becoming the league's youngest goalscorer against Bayern Munich in just 19 days, and has recorded 44 assists in league play over the past four seasons. He is the only player in his 20s among the top five in the assist rankings. His potential for further development has not yet ended.
Wirtz played a total of 45 matches in the 2024-2025 season for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists. Bayer Leverkusen achieved a Bundesliga runner-up finish and reached the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League. In the previous 2023-2024 season, he led the team to an undefeated Bundesliga title and reached the final of the UEFA Europa League, where he won the German Player of the Year award. His season statistics included 49 matches, 18 goals, and 20 assists.
Bayer Leverkusen has demanded 150 million euros (approximately 236 billion won) for Wirtz's contract termination, but Liverpool has negotiated lower terms to reach an agreement. Although Wirtz had a contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, he is reported to have viewed a move to Liverpool as his top priority and has hoped for a transfer since last month. Bayern Munich also attempted to sign him but was outmatched by the player's early decision.
Liverpool stated, "Wirtz has arrived in England ahead of the medical TES for his transfer to Liverpool. The transfer fee will be the highest in British football history. Our club reached a verbal agreement with Bayer Leverkusen last week. Although three previous offers were rejected, the fourth and final offer, which included a base of 100 million pounds with additional options, was accepted and negotiations were concluded."
Subsequently, British 'Tribuna' reported, "According to reports, Wirtz has passed the first medical TES conducted in Liverpool."
It was later reported, "According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, Wirtz completed part of the medical examination immediately after arriving in the UK. The second medical is scheduled for the morning of the 20th (local time), and if this procedure is completed without issues, the transfer is expected to be officially confirmed."
The media added, "Liverpool has successfully signed Wirtz, overcoming competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City. Wirtz is a key resource for midfield reinforcement, and he is expected to significantly strengthen Liverpool's squad this season."
