It was officially announced on the 19th that Lee Dong-gook, a former national soccer team striker, has been appointed as the technical director of Yongin FC (tentative), which is in the process of being founded with the goal of participating in K League 2 in 2026.
Mayor Lee Sang-il urged on the 19th, during the presentation of the appointment letter to Technical Director Lee Dong-gook in his office, that he should put in effort based on his rich experience and leadership gained during his playing career towards the founding of 'Yongin FC,' club operations, and the improvement of player skills.
Having achieved various accomplishments as a national team member for Korea and actively participating in various broadcasting and soccer administration fields after retirement, Technical Director Lee Dong-gook is expected to play a significant role in the founding and successful operation of 'Yongin FC' by utilizing his high public recognition and expertise.
Technical Director Lee Dong-gook said, "I am thankful to Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin Special City and the people of Yongin for giving me the opportunity to contribute to the founding process of 'Yongin FC'" and added, "I will strive to ensure that we become a team that is differentiated from existing professional soccer teams."
Appointed officially on the 19th, Technical Director Lee Dong-gook will oversee all aspects of team operations including player composition, operational direction, youth development system establishment, and long-term power reinforcement planning for 'Yongin FC.'
Technical Director Lee Dong-gook boasts a glamorous career as a striker representing Korean soccer. He began his playing career at Pohang Steelers and has played for Germany's Werder Bremen, England's Middlesbrough, Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, and Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
He is the first player in Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors to have his jersey permanently retired and is regarded as 'the legend of K League' for joining the 70-70 club, recording a total of 228 goals in K League history. In national team matches, he scored 33 goals in 105 games and became the 13th member of the Century Club of the national men's soccer team.
Having retired from active play in 2017, Technical Director Lee Dong-gook has contributed to the development of soccer by working in soccer commentary and broadcasting, as well as in various fields including serving as vice president of the Korea Football Association.
