Could it be that the heavens were moved by Jang Du-seong's fighting spirit? Just four days ago, he was hospitalized due to pulmonary hemorrhage, and the results from a large hospital examination showed that he is stable.
A representative from the Lotte Giants in professional baseball said on the afternoon of the 16th, "As a result of a detailed examination by the pulmonary and esophageal surgery department at Samsung Medical Center, it appears that the bleeding caused by pulmonary contusion has stopped, and he seems to be in stable condition. Because the damage is not severe, light exercise is possible."
Outfielder Jang Du-seong started as a No. 1 center fielder in the match against Suwon KT Wiz on the 12th, but was urgently transported to the hospital due to an unexpected injury during the 10th inning of extra time.
In the 10th inning of extra time with the score tied at 7-7, after one out, Jang Du-seong drew a walk against KT's closer Park Young-hyun. After that, while Go Seung-min was at bat, he was hit hard in the left side of his body by Park Young-hyun's pick-off attempt at first base.
Despite this, Jang Du-seong saw the ball go behind him and sprinted to second base, but after arriving at second, he doubled over and expelled blood-tinged vomit while complaining of significant pain. Coach Yoo Jae-shin made a gesture indicating something was coming out of Jang Du-seong's mouth and requested emergency assistance, indicating how serious the situation was. Thankfully, Jang Du-seong managed to lift himself, but he was transported urgently to the hospital by ambulance.
According to the results of the first examination, bleeding from pulmonary contusion was found, and he was scheduled to be hospitalized at Hwahae Hospital near Suwon KT Wiz Park for 4 to 5 days before returning to Busan. Fortunately, the bleeding stopped, and he was discharged the next day to rest at home, and on that day, the large hospital examination showed no additional bleeding, allowing him to conduct light training with the second team.
A representative from Lotte said, "Jang Du-seong will move to Sangdong to prepare for training. The intensity of the exercise will be gradually increased after monitoring his condition," adding that, "We plan to coordinate his return schedule after a reexamination on the 23rd."
Jang Du-seong, a graduate of Dongsan High School, was selected in the second round, 10th pick, of the 2018 rookie draft by Lotte and is an eight-year veteran outfielder. He fulfilled his military service obligations and, after his discharge, moved between being a defensive substitution and a pinch runner. This season, he was soaring with a .333 batting average, 47 hits, 23 RBIs, 34 runs scored, and 9 stolen bases in 61 games, but his success story was momentarily interrupted by an unexpected injury.
On the 11th against Suwon KT, Jang Du-seong faced Park Young-hyun and struck out after 11 pitches, but he received praise from manager Kim Tae-hyoung for his contributions to Lotte's dramatic comeback victory. He was leading Lotte's scrappy play amid many injuries with his desperation and fighting spirit.
Now that the bleeding has stopped, he will begin preparing to resume his success story from the 10th round with the second team.
