Can Tottenham Hotspur bring in both a manager and a star player? Reports suggest that Bryan Mbeumo (26, Brentford) has completed a personal agreement with Manchester United despite the hot calls from Tottenham. Now, Tottenham is considering other alternatives.
According to British media 'Give Me Sport' on the 16th (Korean time), "Tottenham is eager to sign a duo worth £140 million (about 258.3 billion won), including Mbeumo, for manager Thomas Frank. They highly regard Mbeumo along with Southampton winger Tyler Dibbling and Brentford striker Yoane Wissa."
The media noted, "With Tottenham's successful Europa League win, they will have a busy transfer market this summer for their Champions League entry next season. After the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou earlier this month, North London is entering a new era under Frank's regime," adding, "Despite Postecoglou ending Tottenham's trophy drought, it was a disappointing season with 22 losses in the Premier League. Consequently, if Tottenham wants to get back on the right track, significant reinforcements will be needed."
According to European football transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United has already completed a personal agreement with Mbeumo. However, they have not yet received approval from his current club, Brentford. Manchester United is reportedly in ongoing discussions to find a compromise on the transfer fee with Brentford.
The Cameroon-born forward Mbeumo can operate as a right winger and a center forward. He has been playing for Brentford since August 2019 and has not changed his uniform since the team was promoted to the Premier League.
In particular, Mbeumo has had the best year of his career this season. He scored 20 goals and provided 7 assists in all 38 Premier League matches, setting a new career high. Although his partner Ivan Toney left for Saudi Arabia last summer, Mbeumo shone even brighter and established himself as a star player. His overall record at Brentford stands at 242 matches and 70 goals.
Manchester United, looking to bolster its attack this summer, has identified Mbeumo as a target. It is envisioned that he will form a trio with the already signed Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes.
Mbeumo has also shown a green light for a move to Manchester United. He has received interest from other big Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle United but has decided to join Manchester United. Like Cunha, he is known to have a particular affection for Manchester United.
However, variables have arisen as Tottenham has joined the fray. They are attempting to hijack Mbeumo as they bring in manager Frank from Brentford.
Tottenham particularly hopes that the presence of manager Frank, who has already been appointed, will help persuade Mbeumo. Unlike Manchester United, the fact that they will be participating in the UEFA Champions League could also be a positive factor.
However, in terms of financial power, it is not easy for Tottenham to outbid Manchester United. A much tighter wage structure compared to Manchester United poses a significant hurdle. The British media 'Mirror' pointed out, "Manchester United has already spent over £60 million (about 110.9 billion won) on Cunha, making it less likely to pay that much more for Mbeumo. Nevertheless, Manchester United could maintain an advantage in terms of wage offers. Even including bonuses, Tottenham will not be able to match the wage Manchester United is likely to propose."
Moreover, Mbeumo is still showing more interest in a transfer to Manchester United. Tottenham is reportedly keeping an eye on Antoine Semenyo and Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) in case they fail to sign Mbeumo.
For now, Manchester United appears confident about acquiring Mbeumo. British media 'Sky Sports' reported, "Manchester United is relaxed about signing the highly sought-after forward Mbeumo, even though he is attracting interest from Tottenham. Brentford values Mbeumo at over £60 million and both Manchester United and Tottenham are willing to entertain offers."
Mbeumo also wants to join Manchester United. The media explained, "Manchester United is aware of Tottenham's interest but is taking it easy regarding the acquisition of Mbeumo. We reported last Friday that Tottenham initiated preliminary talks with Brentford. Mbeumo is attracting interest from Tottenham, which just appointed his former manager Thomas Frank. However, according to one source, he seems to lean more towards Manchester United for now."
Earlier this month, Manchester United proposed a base transfer fee of £45 million (about 83.5 billion won) along with an additional £10 million (about 18.5 billion won) for Mbeumo to Brentford but was rejected. They are reportedly planning to raise the amount for a second offer. However, like Tottenham, Manchester United is also considering acquiring Semenyo and is determined not to spend beyond a reasonable value set internally.
Tottenham is also keeping an eye on other players, including the 2006 prospect Tyler Dibbling. Romano hinted, "Tottenham values both Mbeumo and Dibbling highly, but no specific talks have taken place yet. An internal meeting with Frank is scheduled for this week." For now, there is a good possibility that Tottenham may shift their focus to either Dibbling or Semenyo.
