The split between Manchester United and Alejandro Garnacho (21) is nearing a conclusion. With a transfer fee set at £70 million (about 129.4 billion won), Garnacho is reportedly hoping to remain in the Premier League.
The British 'Daily Mail' reported on the 16th (Korea time) that "Garnacho is ready to leave Manchester United and prefers England as his next destination."
Garnacho was left out of the starting lineup in last month’s UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham, leading to public clashes with coach Ruben Amorim and fueling transfer rumors.
Following the 0-1 defeat in the final, Garnacho strongly criticized the season through his social media, stating, "It was a terrible season," while his older brother and agent noted, "My brother has been abandoned," directly targeting coach Amorim. Ultimately, it is reported that coach Amorim informed him in front of teammates during training to "immediately look for a new team."
Despite this conflict, there is a strong interest in Garnacho. However, Manchester United is demanding a hefty transfer fee of £70 million, which has already deterred several clubs, including Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
Nonetheless, Garnacho strongly desires to remain in the Premier League. The Daily Mail reported, "Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring him, and SSC Napoli is also keeping an eye on the situation."
Garnacho played 20 minutes as a substitute in the 2024-2025 UEFA Europa League final but could not prevent the team's defeat. He then expressed significant dissatisfaction with his standing, and coach Amorim publicly warned him, further souring their relationship.
Although he still has three years left on his contract, Manchester United considers him a key asset for sale this summer. His age of 20 and potential are factors that can provide high value.
Particularly, there have been ongoing transfer rumors regarding Tottenham, which are linked to Son Heung-min approaching 33 years of age. Earlier in January, some experts emphasized that Tottenham needed to find a replacement for Son Heung-min and prepare for the future, bringing up Garnacho’s name, with various media outlets such as 'Football Transfers' and 'The Hard Tackle' reporting that Tottenham is looking to acquire Manchester United's winger Alejandro Garnacho (21) as a substitute for Son Heung-min. 'Football Fanscast' also analyzed several metrics comparing Son Heung-min and Garnacho.
Furthermore, even though Tottenham has already fully acquired left winger Mathis Tel, Garnacho's name is once again surfacing, raising concerns that the separation between Son Heung-min and the club may become a reality.
Manchester United is currently undergoing a major squad overhaul. Players such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho are also classified as transfer targets, and Christian Eriksen, Johnny Evans, and Viktor Lindelof have already left the team.
Meanwhile, on the first day of the transfer market, Manchester United began its summer activities by signing Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million (about 115.7 billion won). They are targeting Brian Mbeumo and Viktor Gyökeres to strengthen their attacking lineup. Both players are expected to cost over £60 million, making the sale of Garnacho an important choice for securing finances.
In summary, the promising Garnacho is now more likely to leave the team due to conflicts with the coach, and his desire to remain in the Premier League will potentially play a crucial role in determining his next destination.
