Tottenham Hotspur is facing the possibility of reluctantly accepting the transfer of captain Son Heung-min (33). If a lucrative offer from the Saudi Arabian Pro League materializes, Son could leave North London this summer.
The British media outlet Sports Mole reported on the 15th (Korea time) that "Tottenham will accept the transfer if the large offer made to Son Heung-min is financially beneficial to the club." Son currently has one year remaining on his contract.
Tottenham's one-year extension option for Son Heung-min has borne fruit. Son, wearing the captain's armband, lifted the trophy after defeating Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final for the 2024-2025 season, marking his first major personal victory and Tottenham's first European competition title in 41 years.
Long-term contract negotiations have not taken place. Meeting Son on the 10th at Seoul World Cup Stadium, he avoided specific comments when asked about his future by saying, "There is still one year left." If no negotiations occur ahead of the contract expiration in the summer of 2026, he will become a free agent.
Amid this situation, clubs in the Saudi Pro League are showing interest in Son Heung-min. Football journalist Pete O'Rourke noted through Football Insider that "if a substantial offer capable of convincing Son comes in, and Tottenham can also generate revenue, the club could accept his transfer."
O'Rourke added, "From a business perspective, now may be the ideal time for Tottenham to balance their Financial Fair Play (FFP) and secure funds for the summer transfer market," noting, "While Son's own wishes are most important, the club may reluctantly agree to the transfer depending on the situation."
Son recorded 11 goals and 12 assists in 46 official games for the 2024-2025 season. Having played for Tottenham since 2015, he has a total of 173 goals and 101 assists in 454 matches to date.
As Son Heung-min approaches his 33rd birthday, his status is closely tied to Tottenham's consolidation process. New head coach Thomas Frank has permanently acquired Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, and the club is in the process of acquiring Brayan Mbeumo from Brentford, while also targetting another forward from Brentford.
If Son cannot accept a role change to that of a 'joker' or 'rotation member', the time may come for him to conclude his decade in North London and choose a new challenge.
