Newcastle United legend and renowned "pundit" Alan Shearer (54) seems to be looking forward to a refreshed Tottenham.
Shearer said on the 16th (Korean time) through Britain's 'Betfair', "I acknowledge Thomas Frank as the new Tottenham manager. It's interesting to see Tottenham being revitalized."
Tottenham announced earlier on the 13th via the club's official channel, "We have signed a three-year contract with Manager Frank until June 2028." Joining the Tottenham coaching staff are also Justin Cochrane, Chris Haslam, Joe Newton, and Andreas Georgsson, who previously worked alongside Frank at Brentford. The appointment of Frank was announced a week after the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou.
Frank began his coaching career in 2008 with the Danish youth national teams. He managed Brøndby in 2013 and subsequently became the head coach at Brentford in 2016. Promoted to manager in 2018, he led Brentford for nearly seven years, guiding the team to promotion to the Premier League in the 2020-2021 season, which is considered one of his hallmark achievements.
Under Frank's regime, Brentford demonstrated competitiveness in the Premier League. They finished 13th in 2022, 9th in 2023, 16th in 2024, and wrapped up the last season in 10th place. Frank has been praised for managing the team stably with diverse tactics and customized strategies. He is also highly regarded for his youth development and player scouting abilities. Frank is known to be close friends with Tottenham's technical director Johan Lange, and the two plan to work closely together in pursuit of a successful first season.
The now 'former commander' of Tottenham, Postecoglou, led the club to a Europa League victory in the 2024-2025 season, delivering the club its first major trophy in 17 years. However, the league performance was poor, recording a club historic high of 22 losses in the Premier League and finishing at 17th place. Eventually, Tottenham's leadership chose to replace the manager.
Shearer remarked, "Frank has accomplished incredible things at Brentford. He elevated the team's value through player acquisitions and tactical management. I worked with him during the BBC broadcast at the Euro tournament, and he was truly an outstanding person. He now deserves a chance at a club aiming for championships. However, he is going to a team that operates in a completely different manner. It will be interesting to see how that turns out."
Frank has led Brentford since 2018, achieving promotion and establishing the team in the mid-table of the Premier League. He is recognized for his ability to develop unheralded players and for his leadership in forging a united team.
Shearer noted, "It’s truly a pleasure that he has received this opportunity (to be Tottenham's manager). It may sound disrespectful to Brentford, but it’s not surprising at all that bigger clubs want him. It's natural for such teams to be interested."
Shearer also mentioned the dismissed Postecoglou.
Shearer stated, "Tottenham has been trophyless for 17 years, and while injuries were high this season, Manager Postecoglou managed to deliver the trophy and a Champions League spot to the club. Even so, he was dismissed. There must be a reason behind the decision made by Tottenham. The league performance (17th place) could have influenced that. However, it is remarkable to dismiss a manager who achieved his goals in such circumstances. It’s only natural that the fans supported him. He promised to bring a trophy and did so. Yet, the reward for that is dismissal, which is unfortunate."
Among those supporting Manager Frank is Christian Eriksen, who played for Tottenham.
Eriksen played a vital role as a key midfielder for Tottenham during Mauricio Pochettino's tenure. After experiencing cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, he returned to the pitch through Brentford, then under the guidance of Manager Frank. In an interview with Danish media 'Ekstra Bladet', Eriksen said, "Frank is the perfect fit for Tottenham. His personality, playing style, and attitude all align well. Tottenham is at a point where they need to build anew. Frank is the right manager to lead that effort."
