Yoo Young-chan has recorded a second scoreless multi-inning outing since returning from elbow surgery rehabilitation.
On the 14th, Yoo Young-chan took the mound as a relief pitcher in a big matchup against the Hanwha Eagles at Hanwha Life Park in Daejeon, pitching 1⅓ innings without allowing any hits, striking out one, and recording no earned runs. He faced 5 batters with a pitch count of 15 (11 strikes).
The matchup between LG and Hanwha, dubbed 'a preview of the Korean Series,' was a tense battle from the first inning, leading to a one-point game. LG scored first with a sacrifice fly by Shin Min-jae in the top of the 5th inning with one out and a runner on third base. Hanwha turned the game around in the bottom of the 7th, capitalizing on LG’s ace reliever Jang Hyun-sik by hitting four consecutive singles for a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the 8th, LG capitalized on three walks against the Hanwha bullpen to create a bases-loaded opportunity. Park Dong-won then tied the game 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to center field against closer Kim Seo-hyeon, who had come in early.
In the bottom of the 8th, LG’s bullpen pitcher Lee Ji-kang recorded one out but then allowed consecutive walks to Moon Hyun-bin and Roh Si-hwan. With one out and runners on first and second, LG's bench quickly called in closer Yoo Young-chan.
Yoo Young-chan got Kim Tae-yean out with an infield fly to second baseman on a first-pitch slider. He then threw successive sliders to Lee Jin-young to reach two strikes, and on the fifth pitch, he recorded a groundout to the shortstop to avoid allowing any runs.
Yoo Young-chan took the mound again in the 9th inning. He recorded two outs against Ahn Chi-hong with a groundout to shortstop and Lee Jae-won with a groundout to third base. He struck out Hwang Young-mook with back-to-back 148 km/h fastballs after a 3-ball, 1-strike count.
Yoo Young-chan took the mound with tape around his neck, showing signs of treatment for neck stiffness. He was unable to pitch on the 11th against SSG in Jamsil due to sudden neck stiffness; he was also unavailable for the game against SSG on the 12th.
After the game against Hanwha on the 13th was canceled due to rain, he received treatment and rested for two consecutive days, improving his physical condition. He showcased a perfect pitching performance through his determination despite injury.
Yoo Young-chan, who underwent elbow surgery in December of last year, returned on the 1st. He has appeared in four games, recording one save and an earned run average of 3.60. In his first outing of the season against Samsung in Jamsil on the 1st, he pitched two-thirds of an inning without allowing any runs, facing two players on base and not allowing any inherited runners to score due to a strikeout and a groundout.
He subsequently took on the closing role. On the 5th against NC in Changwon, he came in during the 8th inning with one out and bases loaded while leading 3-1, putting out the fire with consecutive strikeouts and recording a save with 1⅔ innings pitched, no hits allowed, and three strikeouts without any earned runs.
On the 8th, he appeared in the 9th inning against Kiwoom after leading 7-0, aiming to manage his condition, but allowed two earned runs. He has never allowed a run when coming in with runners on base, stopping all seven inherited runners.
