Hanwha Eagles missed their chance to reclaim first place.

Hanwha recorded a 2-2 tie against the LG Twins in the 11th inning of a game held on the 14th at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon. Hanwha, in second place, is trailing first-place LG by 0.5 games. Had Hanwha won the game that day, they could have ascended to first place.

They recorded a regrettable tie after being out at home twice. In particular, they wasted a chance to end the game with reckless base running in the bottom of the 11th.

Hanwha's starting pitcher Ponce recorded 6 innings (103 pitches), allowing 4 hits, 1 walk, striking out 10, and conceding 1 run. They allowed the only run on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the 5th inning with one out and a runner on second.

Hanwha took the lead in the 7th inning after LG's starter Im Chan-kyu (6 innings, no runs) left the game. Lead-off hitter Chae Eun-seong got on base with a single to left after a video review overturned a 3-base hit to a foul.

When Lee Jin-young struck out, the runner on first, Lee Won-seok, stole second successfully. With one out and runners on first and second, An Chi-hong hit a double that struck the right-field monster wall, tying the game at 1-1. Choi Jae-hun then hit a single into center field, setting up a one-out, runners on first and third situation. Hwang Young-mook executed a surprise bunt to the first base side, turning the score to 2-1.

The pitcher attempted a glove toss but an error resulted in another one out, runners on first and third situation. LG replaced the pitcher with Kim Jin-sung. Lee Won-seok hit the first pitch, but it turned into a ground ball double play to the third baseman.

In the 8th inning, Hanwha's relief pitcher Han Seung-hyeok handed the ball to left-hander Kim Beom-su with one out and a runner on first. Kim Beom-su allowed a hit by pitch and a walk, resulting in a one out, bases loaded situation, prompting closer Kim Seo-hyeon to enter the game. He allowed a sacrifice fly to Park Dong-won, tying the game at 2-2.

With no winner determined in the regular innings, the game moved into extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th inning, with one out and runners on first and second, Roh Si-hwan missed a chance with a ground ball double play to the shortstop.

In the bottom of the 11th inning with two outs, An Chi-hong created a chance with a double down the left-field line. Lee Jae-won hit a short single in front of the left fielder off a high curve from LG's bullpen pitcher Park Myeong-geun, who caught the ball on one hop. An Chi-hong does not have particularly quick feet.

However, third base coach Kim Jae-geol gestured for An Chi-hong to run home. At the moment An Chi-hong stepped on third base and started running home, the left fielder was ready to throw the ball home. Though it’s a common play to send the runner home with two outs on a hit, it was a risky decision as the hit was too short.

There was nothing to do but hope for a rare misthrow from the left fielder. Even that would be difficult without a significant distance from the target for a safe call. Song Chan-ui's throw bounced accurately to catcher Park Dong-won, who caught the ball and tagged out An Chi-hong comfortably. LG players celebrated as if they had won.

Earlier, Hanwha had a runner on third with two outs in the bottom of the 5th when Im Chan-kyu's curveball bounced in front of the catcher. Runner Lee Won-seok ran home but was caught in a rundown as the catcher got to the ball quickly. He was tagged out after a throw from catcher to third baseman and back to the catcher.
