Could Bryan Mbeumo (26, Brentford) be wearing a Tottenham uniform with coach Thomas Frank? He is reported to be close to a move to Manchester United, but the possibility of Tottenham hijacking has rapidly emerged.
The BBC reported on the 13th (Korea time) that "Tottenham is interested in signing Brentford forward Mbeumo. The Cameroon international scored 20 goals in the Premier League last season."
The media noted, "Frank, the former coach of Brentford, was recently appointed as the coach of Tottenham. Earlier this month, Mbeumo, who turned 25, received an offer from Manchester United that included a transfer fee of £45 million (about 83.5 billion won) plus an additional £10 million (about 18.5 billion won). However, this fell significantly short of the amount Brentford wanted, and no agreement was reached between the clubs."
In the meantime, Tottenham is targeting Mbeumo. The BBC explained, "Tottenham has not yet submitted an official transfer proposal for Mbeumo. However, he is receiving more interest from clubs participating in the Champions League in Europe," adding, "Mbeumo has no buyout clause in his contract with Brentford and has one year left on his contract, which also includes an option for a one-year extension."
The Cameroon-born forward Mbeumo can play both as a right winger and a center forward. He has been with Brentford since August 2019 and has not changed uniforms even after the team was promoted to the Premier League.
In particular, Mbeumo has had his best season this year. He appeared in all 38 Premier League matches, recording 20 goals and 7 assists, setting a new career high. Last summer, after his partner Ivan Toney left for Saudi Arabia, Mbeumo shone even brighter, establishing himself as the ace. His overall record with Brentford stands at 242 matches and 70 goals.
Manchester United, which is looking to strengthen its attack this summer, has targeted Mbeumo. The club is envisioning a triangle formation with Mateus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, both of whom have already been signed. Although their first proposal submitted to Brentford was rejected, they plan to increase the amount to £60 million (about 111.3 billion won) to persuade the club again.
Mbeumo also dreams of a move to Manchester United. He has attracted interest from other Premier League big clubs like Arsenal and Newcastle United but has decided to join Manchester United. He is known to have a special affection for United, similar to Cunha.
However, a variable has emerged as Tottenham has intervened. Tottenham is belatedly entering the race to sign Mbeumo. While Tottenham cannot promise as high a salary as Manchester United, they hope that the presence of Coach Frank, who has already been appointed, will help persuade Mbeumo.
Coach Frank has been steadily managing Brentford since 2018. He is called a hero for stabilizing a team that was floundering in the lower leagues and leading it to a mid-table position in the Premier League. He has already spent six seasons with Mbeumo.
Now Coach Frank has taken the helm at Tottenham. His presence could be a significant variable in the signing battle for Mbeumo. Tottenham desires to bring the ace along with his coach from Brentford.
The Sun in the UK reported, "Frank is willing to move to Tottenham. A compensation package of £10 million will not be a problem," adding, "Then Tottenham can seriously join the chase for Mbeumo. They also have cash equivalent to what Manchester United is expected to offer, which provides an opportunity to play in the Champions League."
Mbeumo now also seems to be considering a move to Tottenham. Sky Sports in the UK reported, "Since Frank took over, Tottenham has engaged in initial discussions with Brentford regarding a contract for Mbeumo, who has shown increased interest in joining Tottenham. They are also interested in Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth."
The media added, "Tottenham appointed Frank as their new manager on Thursday. They are said to have gained positive momentum regarding a potential contract with his star player Mbeumo."
Tottenham, which wants to hijack Mbeumo, has now offered an amount exceeding what United has proposed. According to the Mirror, Tottenham has suggested a base amount of £65 million (about 120.6 billion won) plus £5 million (about 9.3 billion won) in options to Brentford. This is approximately £10 million higher than the amount proposed by Manchester United.
Since Manchester United has already spent £62.5 million (about 115.1 billion won) to sign Cunha, they are likely to fall short in the financial competition with Tottenham. The Mirror pointed out, "Manchester United has already used over £60 million on Cunha, so it is unlikely they will pay more than that for Mbeumo. Nevertheless, the advantage for Manchester United may lie in the weekly salary. Even with bonuses, Tottenham will not be able to match the weekly salary that United will offer."
