It was a very welcome rain for the professional baseball team LG Twins.
LG enjoyed a sweet rest as the game scheduled against Hanwha Eagles at Hanwha Life Park in Daejeon on the 13th was canceled due to rain.
LG was in a position where they would have to have a bullpen day since Son Ju-yeong was excluded from the first team entry for rest in the starting rotation against Hanwha in a three-game series. Due to the rain cancellation, they would not have a bullpen day and could have Im Chan-kyu (14th) and Song Seung-gi (15th) pitch.
The day before (12th), Gu Bon-hyeok, who collapsed after being hit by a 141 km/h fastball on the back of his hand during the game against SSG Landers, was also able to adjust his condition with a day's rest. Gu Bon-hyeok was in great pain after being hit by the pitch and was immediately taken to the hospital for examinations. Fortunately, he was relieved to receive a diagnosis that there were no fractures.
Manager Youm Kyoung-youb noted in an interview with the press after the game against Hanwha on the 13th was canceled due to rain, "I think it's a great relief that Bon-hyeok's bones aren't broken. We're currently playing a defensive style of baseball, hanging on with our starters and defense. Without Bon-hyeok... Right now, Bon-hyeok and Haemin are fulfilling their roles on the center line in defense. Bon-hyeok is even performing better than Jihwan in defense."
With Oh Ji-hwan struggling at the plate and down in the second team, Gu Bon-hyeok is an irreplaceable infielder.
Gu Bon-hyeok is particularly quick at taking the ball out of the glove. In the game against SSG, he made a diving catch on a hit by speedy left-handed batter Park Seong-han, quickly got up, and threw to first base to get the out. Manager Youm said, "Bon-hyeok was able to get the out because he was quick to take the ball out."
If the game against Hanwha on the 13th had not been canceled due to rain, Gu Bon-hyeok planned to start as the shortstop. Manager Youm said, "He said he would do it. I thought it was a great relief. I thought the sky was falling down."
As an ambulance entered the field, the crowd was concerned about a serious injury. Manager Youm said, "I thought it was 100% (a fracture). Bon-hyeok usually doesn't throw his helmet unless it's serious, but now he’s incredibly motivated and thinking, 'I need to play baseball.' He probably threw his helmet because he had a bad feeling. I thought it was definitely broken."
During the game against SSG, my attention was focused on Gu Bon-hyeok's examination. Manager Youm said, "I kept checking with the training staff during the game, asking, 'What happened?' They told me, 'It's not broken; his hand movement has improved a bit.' I sighed in relief then."
After finishing the game against SSG on the 12th, the LG team moved to Daejeon and checked Gu Bon-hyeok's condition with the training staff on the 13th, confirming that he was okay. They said he was available to start.
Manager Youm said, "It's a bruise. Since he was icing it and said he could bat, I'm sure he would have agreed. Otherwise, the training staff wouldn't have signed off on it."
