Professional baseball player Kim Kwang-hyun of SSG Landers conveyed his gratitude to fans after signing a contract extension ahead of free agency.
SSG announced on the 13th, 'We have signed a multi-year contract with the franchise star and veteran left-handed ace Kim Kwang-hyun for 2 years at a total of 3.6 billion won (300 million won annual salary, 60 million won in options).'
Kim Kwang-hyun joined SSG (then SK) as the first overall pick in the 2007 rookie draft and has only played for SSG, except for his time with the Major League St. Louis Cardinals in 2020 and 2021. He is a franchise star with a career record of 400 games (2,249 innings) in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) League, tallying 174 wins, 104 losses, 2 holds, and an earned run average of 3.35.
SSG noted that Kim Kwang-hyun, who was eligible for free agency after the 2025 season, reached an agreement with the club. 'This contract reflects his strong motivation for achieving 200 career wins in the KBO League and the club's long-term plans to support him,' the team explained regarding the background of the extension.
As SSG prepares to enter Cheongna Dome in 2028, the team envisions starting the new stadium's opening with Kim Kwang-hyun. "We assess that Kim Kwang-hyun has played an important role as a franchise star representing the team and league, not only in performance but also in dedication and leadership, and we see this contract as the first step in preparing for the opening of the Cheongna era in 2028," expressing expectations for Kim Kwang-hyun's performance and role.
Kim Kwang-hyun expressed through his social media, 'Hello, this is Kim Kwang-hyun. Today, I have signed a multi-year contract once again. I have been able to pursue my childhood dream of a 20-year professional career thanks to all the fans who have supported me both on and off the field,' sharing his gratitude along with the announcement of the extension.
"This contract serves as a motivation and encouragement for my second dream goal of achieving 200 wins," said Kim Kwang-hyun, adding, "I will do my best in every game to ensure victory. Additionally, I will help my juniors gain good experience and win trophies before heading to Cheongna. I will lead by example and share everything I have felt and learned with my juniors. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude once again to the club officials and fans for giving me this opportunity," pledging to lead the team to victory in the remaining season and throughout his career.
