Robert Lewandowski (37, Barcelona) won. Michał Probierz (53), the head coach of the Poland national football team, resigned following a conflict with Lewandowski.
Probierz stated on the 12th (Korea time) through the Polish Football Association, "I have determined that the best choice for the national team in the current situation is for me to resign," adding, "Taking on this position was the realization of my professional dream and the greatest honor of my life."
This comes four days after Poland's primary striker Lewandowski declared that he would not play for the national team under Probierz. It appears that Probierz faced resignation pressure due to Lewandowski's insistence.
Probierz expressed, "I am deeply grateful to all my colleagues and the staff of the Polish Football Association (PZPN). I have always been able to count on your trust and support," adding, "Since the national team is a source of pride for all of us, I wish you all continued success in the future."
Probierz also concluded his resignation statement by saying, "And a special thank you to the wonderful fans. You have always stood by the national team, no matter where or when."
In response, the Polish Football Association stated, "We are deeply grateful for Probierz's dedication and efforts to lead the national team and wish him success in his future career."
Earlier, Probierz appointed Piotr Zieliński (31, Inter Milan) as the captain instead of Lewandowski. The all-time leading scorer for Poland, Lewandowski, said, "My trust has been broken. I was greatly hurt by the way I found out about the change in captaincy."
He continued, "While I was putting my children to bed, I received a brief call from Probierz, and shortly after, a statement about the captaincy being revoked was posted on the Polish Football Association's website."
The recent situation involving the Poland national team has escalated beyond a simple change of captaincy to issues of trust and leadership within the team.
