Hwang Sun-woo (22, Gangwon Provincial Autonomous Government) set a new tournament record at the 4th Gwangju National Swimming Championships, winning the gold medal in the 100m butterfly.
Hwang touched the pad first in the 100m butterfly final held at the Gwangju Nambu University Municipal International Swimming Pool on the 12th, clocking 52.34 seconds.
After the race, Hwang noted through his management company, All That Sports, "It's been three years since I competed in my main event, freestyle, and I'm satisfied with my performance in butterfly, especially since I set a new tournament record and my time wasn't bad. I'm particularly pleased today because my teammates Kim Woo-min and Kim Young-beom achieved good times in the 200m freestyle."
He also stated, "Since 2021, we've continued our relay team and have maintained a good rhythm. If everyone keeps their condition in good shape and trains hard, I think it's possible to achieve our dream record of entering the 6-minute range at the World Championships in Singapore." Hwang is scheduled to compete in the individual medley 200m on the 14th.
On the same day, Kim Woo-min also secured first place in the 200m freestyle, which is not his main event. He finished the race with a time of 1 minute 45.85 seconds.
After the race, Kim Woo-min remarked, "This was my first competition in a long time since the national team trials, and I feel good finishing with a satisfying time. I felt less nervous during this competition and was able to put my strength into my performance, so I expected good results."
He added, "I'm happy that my teammate Kim Young-beom also achieved a good time during the race, and we will cooperate in the 800m relay at the World Championships in Singapore next month to show good results." He expressed his aspirations for the 2025 International Swimming Federation (AQUA) World Championships in Singapore, which will be held on the 11th of next month.
Now, Kim Woo-min is set to participate in the 100m freestyle on the 13th to check his condition once again. He is challenging for his second consecutive victory in the men's 400m freestyle at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore.
