Shohei Ohtani (Los Angeles Dodgers) is steadily building up for a dual-role comeback. Manager Dave Roberts mentioned the possibility of a return before the All-Star break.
On the 11th (Korean time), Ohtani completed his third live pitching session before a game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park in San Diego, California.
On that day, Ohtani threw 44 pitches over 3 innings. He brought in two teenage players training at the Arizona Spring Training camp to stand in the batter's box while he pitched. He threw the most pitches during the live pitching session. His fastball velocity ranged from 94 to 96 mph (151.3 km to 154.5 km). Local media explained that he induced 6 Samjin and 15 swings and misses.
Both Manager Dave Roberts and Pitching Coach Mark Pryor are encouraged by Ohtani's build-up process. After undergoing elbow surgery in September 2023 and left shoulder surgery last year during the World Series, there has been growing interest in when he will return as a pitcher, with the timing now becoming more specific. They explained that the return schedule could be moved up. Manager Roberts noted, "There is a possibility that it's not completely impossible" regarding Ohtani's potential return before the All-Star break.
MLB.com reported, "General predictions suggest that he will have to serve as a designated hitter during the season, so he may only be able to step on a big league mound after the All-Star break. However, considering Ohtani's development speed, the possibility of a return before the All-Star break cannot be completely ruled out."
Manager Roberts stated, "It's an enticing thought. Ohtani probably wants to pitch in a game right now. But I think he is doing well with patience," adding, "There is no need to fully complete the build-up. Anything Ohtani can provide will be helpful."
Coach Pryor noted, "If he can handle about 44 pitches, then he should be able to throw around 60 to 70 pitches. Then we can start imagining him actually pitching in a game. If he can handle that, it means he could pitch a few innings in a real game." He expressed a positive response to Ohtani's potential return to action. While there are hopeful updates, he added that they are not ignoring medical advice. Manager Roberts stated, "But I believe Ohtani, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, and the training staff will guide him well. I’m just looking forward to his next pitching session," approaching the situation with caution.
Coach Pryor also mentioned, "There are variables that are not present for other general pitchers. Various variables exist every day," explaining Ohtani's unique situation of being a dual-role player.
With Tyler Glasnow, Blake Snell, and Roki Sasaki all injured, the Dodgers are barely holding on during bullpen days. However, if Ohtani joins the pitching staff and starting rotation, it would significantly ease their concerns.
MLB.com stated, "As Ohtani's return becomes imminent, there is a positive atmosphere among the Dodgers' pitching staff. Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow have also recently turned a corner in a good direction and have even pitched out of the bullpen. They have managed well despite not all starters returning, but now the light is beginning to shine through."
Manager Roberts expressed hope, stating, "While it's important to concentrate on progressing with the players we have now, there are also players about to return. I have started to feel the strength nearing its complete form."
