Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham) has once again emerged as a central figure in the transfer market. After finishing the match against Kuwait, Son Heung-min spoke directly.

On the 10th, after the match against Kuwait in the final Asian qualifying round for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, Son Heung-min met with journalists in the mixed zone and, in response to a question about his future, said, "I still have a contract with Tottenham," adding, "I believe it is not appropriate to say something here right now. It’s better to observe."

On this day, Korea achieved a 4-0 victory over Kuwait, marking its 11th consecutive qualification for the World Cup finals. Son Heung-min, who was substituted in at the 28th minute of the second half, played his 134th match in A matches, surpassing Lee Woon-jae (133 matches) to move into third place alone. The only records left are those of Cha Bum-kun and Hong Myung-bo (both 136 matches).

However, alongside the national team's performance, greater attention is being focused on Son Heung-min's future career path. Originally set to expire in the summer of 2025, Son Heung-min's contract was extended until June 2026 when Tottenham exercised a one-year extension option. However, changes within Tottenham have led to renewed speculation regarding a potential transfer.

The BBC recently reported, "Tottenham has no plans to sell Son Heung-min in principle. However, they do not rule it out if a large offer comes in," noting that clubs in the Saudi Arabian Professional League have once again targeted Son Heung-min for acquisition.

The Guardian also analyzed, "Son Heung-min has devoted himself to the team for the past 10 years, but he can no longer be considered an absolute centerpiece. Given his declining stamina and speed, a transfer could be a realistic option."

Indeed, this season, Son Heung-min has faced difficulties. He has frequently been troubled by injuries. In the Premier League, he recorded 7 goals and 10 assists, finishing the season with 11 goals and 12 assists. This marks the first season since his debut with Tottenham in the 2015-2016 season that he has failed to achieve double-digit goals in the league. His foot injury in the latter half of the season did not fully heal and significantly impacted his performance.

In the meantime, interest from Saudi Arabian clubs continues unabated. Al-Riyadiah in Saudi Arabia reported, "Tottenham has shown a willingness to enter into discussions regarding a transfer for Son Heung-min," adding, "However, Tottenham is seeking a transfer fee of over £50 million (about 92.1 billion won)."

There are also complex factors beyond simple transfer fees. With the North and Central American World Cup finals approaching in a year, Son Heung-min is likely to prioritize a team environment where he can consistently secure playing time. A move to Saudi Arabia offers benefits not only in terms of financial factors but also in guaranteeing practical playing opportunities.

Brian King, a former scout for Tottenham, also noted, "Son Heung-min remains an icon for the club, but the organization must calmly prepare for the future," adding, "From the club's perspective, £50 million could be a reasonable transaction."

At the end of the interview that day, Son Heung-min once again chose his words carefully. "Since I have a contract remaining, it is right to wait. I, too, intend to see how things unfold. However, my commitment to giving my best in my role, wherever and whenever, remains unchanged," he added.
