Hwang Dong-il (39), who was called a journeyman setter in the V-League during his playing days, will train a successor to Han Sun-soo at Korean Air Jumbo.
Korean Air Jumbo announced on the 9th, "Ahead of the new season, we implemented a complete overhaul of the coaching staff, bringing in Brazilian head coach Henan along with coaches Rafael and Shin Young-soo, and adding Hwang Dong-il, who has played as one of the top domestic setters and coaches in professional volleyball, as a new coach."
Coach Hwang Dong-il began his career as a tall setter by joining Woori Capital and went on to play for LIG Insurance, Korean Air, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, Hyundai Capital, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and OK Financial Group. After retiring at the end of the 2022-2023 season, he opened his second career as a coach at OK Financial Group and has now taken on a second coaching career at Korean Air. He is expected to be responsible for developing the next generation of main setters to succeed Han Sun-soo and Yoo Gwang-woo.
Korean Air stated, "New coach Hwang Dong-il actively played as a starting setter on several teams, including Korean Air Jumbo, during his playing days, and has gained coaching experience in professional teams after retirement," adding that "as a former player of Korean Air, he has a high understanding of the team and excellent communication skills with players, and is expected to serve well as a bridge between the new head coach and the team."
Korean Air head coach Henan expressed high expectations through a pre-interview with Coach Hwang Dong-il, stating, "A leader who understands the field is needed for long-term stable team management and setter development."
