The '2025 Daegu World University Taekwondo Festival (World University Taekwondo Festival, WUTF)' will be held from July 5 to 8 at the gymnasium of Keimyung University's Seongseo campus in Daegu.
This competition is a G1-level event jointly approved by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), and it is a representative international competition for university taekwondo practitioners that awards Olympic ranking points.
Launched for the first time in 2024, this competition started with approximately 1,800 participants from 56 countries and was successfully held. This year's second competition is preparing for a more solid event with improved game operations and organization. The 2025 competition will attract around 1,800 university taekwondo athletes and officials from 20 countries to Daegu to compete and share the value of taekwondo.
This year, the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation and the World Taekwondo Federation's ODA project budget will be actively utilized to encourage participation from countries with limited access to international sports, focusing on spreading the message of solidarity and peace through taekwondo. Through this competition, Daegu City aims to reaffirm its status as an international hub for taekwondo.
Building on the experience of successfully hosting various international competitions such as the Asian Air Gun Championship, International Youth Sports Games, and last year's WUTF, this event is also expected to showcase a high level of management.
During the competition, there will be side events including taekwondo demonstration performances and traditional cultural experiences, along with a tourism program and cultural exchange events for foreign participants, providing them with opportunities to experience Korean culture and interact with the local community. It is expected to become a venue for cultural integration and exchange among the youth, going beyond just being a sports event. Particularly this year, there will be new and diverse compositions for side events, such as the expansion of cultural experience zones and linkage to K-Culture programs. During the competition period, experiential events will also be largely arranged for participants as well as for the general public and youth, significantly increasing popular interest and accessibility to taekwondo.
This competition is classified as a G1 event by the WTF, with individual and team competitions operated in a tournament format according to official regulations. Participants will be able to earn international ranking points. This holds great significance not only for enhancing the skills of university athletes but also for strengthening competitiveness among nations. Jeong Byeong-gi, the secretary-general of the organizing committee for the World University Taekwondo Festival at Keimyung University and a professor in the Taekwondo Department, noted, "We are thoroughly preparing all processes so that young taekwondo practitioners from around the world can compete safely and fairly. I hope the true values and spirit of taekwondo will be widely spread through this competition."
