More expenses than expected are being incurred. Tottenham is spending a huge amount of money regarding the dismissal of the manager.
Tottenham released an official statement saying, "After considerable deliberation, the club can announce that Postecoglou has been relieved of his duties." They added, "Winning the Europa League this season is one of the greatest moments, but decisions cannot be based on emotions. We express our gratitude to Postecoglou and hope his future goes well."
This is a decision by Chairman Daniel Levy. Just before the official announcement, the British 'Telegraph' reported that "Postecoglou will be dismissed as Tottenham manager. The decision to fire him came just weeks after winning the Europa League." The report noted, "Tottenham is expected to finalize the terms of Postecoglou's dismissal after he returns from vacation on Friday afternoon. Club officials discovered that Chairman Daniel Levy made the final decision, and an official announcement is anticipated soon."
Australian-born Postecoglou took over as Tottenham manager in the summer of 2023. He was the successor to Antonio Conte, who parted ways with the club during the season. Concerns were prevalent since Postecoglou had no European career except for Scotland's Celtic, but he made a splash by bringing Tottenham to the top of the Premier League early in the season.
At that time, it seemed that Postecoglou's confident 'attacking football' was shining. However, this did not last long. Gradually, holes began to appear due to monotonous offensive tactics and excessive match management, and injuries began to arise due to intense training and play, leading to a collapse in the second half.
Naturally, the anger of Tottenham fans exploded. They had already risen in protest demanding the dismissal of Postecoglou months ago, but Chairman Levy did not budge. As a result, the fans' jeers and criticisms grew louder, and there were even incidents of clashes with Postecoglou in the stadium.
As a result, Postecoglou kept his promise by lifting the trophy. Tottenham triumphed over Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) final, claiming the title. Son Heung-min also finally secured his first career victory. However, Tottenham could not escape the worst slump in the Premier League.
While it was right after winning the Europa League, Tottenham ended the season with a final score of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 22 losses, earning 38 points and a goal difference of -1 (64 goals scored, 65 goals conceded) after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Brighton in the last match. This placed them 17th, the worst performance in club history in the Premier League. The previous lowest record was 15th in the 1993-1994 season.
Additionally, they set a new record for the most losses in a single league season. Tottenham had not recorded 20 losses in a 38-game format since the 1912-1913 season, but this time they added 2 more losses. The 22 losses tie for the most in a season in the club's history, even including the 42-game format.
Tottenham will also owe a severance payment to Postecoglou. The Telegraph reported, "Postecoglou will receive approximately £4 million (about 740 million won) as a severance compensation. He also earned a bonus of around £2 million (about 370 million won) for winning the Europa League and securing a Champions League spot."
Meanwhile, immediately after Postecoglou's dismissal, Gary Cotterill, a reporter for British 'Sky Sports,' noted, "Tottenham sent an offer to Brentford's Thomas Frank at the same time as the dismissal of Postecoglou. Both clubs are refraining from official announcements, but negotiations have already entered the final stages."
According to this media outlet, Chairman Levy directly made a transfer offer to Frank. He has 2 years left on his contract with Brentford, which includes a buyout of £10 million (about 1.84 billion won). Chairman Levy is reportedly prepared to pay £10 million to bring Frank in quickly.
Cotterill said, "Tottenham have also reached out to other candidates besides Frank. However, all were unsuccessful due to various issues." He added, "They initially attempted to bring Mauricio Pochettino back as the U.S. national team coach. However, Coach Pochettino is constrained by matters related to the U.S. national team."
