Tottenham Hotspur has decided to dismiss coach Ange Postecoglou. They have already earmarked Thomas Frank, the Brentford coach, as the next leader.
French outlet 'Foot Mercato' reported on the 1st (Korea time) that "Tottenham is in negotiations with Frank, the Brentford coach, to become 'post-Postecoglou.'"
The outlet reported, "This season, Tottenham has completely underperformed in the Premier League. The prestigious English football club Tottenham has fallen into 17th place in the league. Coach Postecoglou had impressive performances since taking office last season. However, despite his promising debut, he finds himself in serious trouble in London."
Now, coach Postecoglou is about to be forced out of Tottenham after two years. Foot Mercato explained, "Despite winning the UEFA Europa League, Postecoglou is facing pressure from the board to resign. According to sources, Tottenham is in contact with Frank."
Tottenham seems to have chosen Frank, among the previously mentioned leading candidates for the next head coach, including Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth coach, and Marco Silva, the Fulham coach. The outlet added, "Frank discussed transfer market plans and summer targets with Tottenham. While Tottenham is considering several candidates for the dismissal of coach Postecoglou, Frank is currently leading the pack."
British outlet 'Football Insider' also reported the same news. The outlet stated, "According to sources, Tottenham has decided to fire Postecoglou. Currently, Tottenham's official position is that chairman Daniel Levy is overseas for the past few weeks, so no final decision has been made yet."
Football Insider also reported, "However, we have heard that the Tottenham hierarchy has decided to end Postecoglou's leadership of the North London club about a week after delivering the first trophy in 17 years. The Tottenham board has been waiting for the thrill of the Europa League victory in Bilbao to fade and to test the mood of the supporters."
Ultimately, the time has come for a farewell. The outlet emphasized, "Tottenham is currently hurrying to find a new coach. It is expected that they will officially announce Postecoglou's dismissal within a few days. The 59-year-old Australian Postecoglou will pay the price for a season that saw them plummet to 17th place with a record 22 losses and 65 goals conceded, the worst in history."
However, the atmosphere is such that winning cannot prevent coach Postecoglou's dismissal. This season, Tottenham lifted the trophy after defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final, marking an end to a 17-year trophy drought since winning the League Cup in the 2007-2008 season.
However, they could not escape the worst slump in the Premier League. Tottenham ended the season with a final record of 11 wins, 5 draws, and 22 losses, with 38 points and a goal difference of -1 (64 goals scored, 65 goals conceded), suffering a final defeat to Brighton with a score of 1-4. Their ranking was just 17th, the worst in club history in the Premier League. The previous worst record was 15th in the 1993-1994 season.
They also set a new record for the most losses in a single league season. Before the Premier League was established in 1992, the last time Tottenham recorded 20 losses in a 38-match format was in the 1912-1913 season, but this time they added two more losses. The 22 losses tie for the most losses in a season in club history across all formats.
For this reason, coach Postecoglou's future is uncertain, despite bringing a trophy to Tottenham. It has been reported locally in the UK that regardless of the championship, there is a high possibility that he will leave the team at the end of this season. Disappointed Tottenham fans even booed chairman Levy during the last game.
Of course, coach Postecoglou has shouted that he is more than qualified to stay at Tottenham. During the victory parade on the 24th of last month, he appealed to fans about his intention to remain, stating, "The best drama is that season 3 is better than season 2."
He also protested the dismissal sentiment. Coach Postecoglou remarked, "How would you evaluate it? This season was amazing! We won a trophy that had eluded us for 17 years and qualified for the Champions League. I am sure that if you had asked anyone at Tottenham early in the season whether they would accept such results, no one would have said no."
He expressed his inability to understand the uncertainty regarding his future. Coach Postecoglou stated, "Honestly, I thought it was really strange to talk about my future after accomplishing something unprecedented." He also reflected, "On one hand, I think, 'Why am I being asked such questions?'"
However, the reality has not changed. Tottenham has already dismissed coach Postecoglou and has begun the process of hiring Frank. Renowned Belgian journalist Sasha Tavolieri also reported, "Danish-born Frank has discussed the Tottenham project and summer transfer targets. Tottenham is considering several candidates, and Frank is high on the list."
Football Insider also noted, "Frank, Silva, and Iraola all have fans in the Tottenham board and have proven their abilities in the Premier League. They possess one of the most preferred qualities, the ability to nurture players." A month ago, Silva appeared to be the leading candidate as he weighed his future at Fulham, but now there are no standout candidates.
The outlet continued, "Postecoglou's plans at Tottenham have collapsed. His future has been in crisis since Tottenham began to plummet in the middle of the season. Merely prioritizing the Europa League will not be enough to keep Postecoglou's job."
The reason Tottenham is pushing for Frank as the top candidate is that he is a realistic option. According to Football Insider, Iraola is about to re-sign with Bournemouth, and Silva is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, backed by oil money. However, Frank has a buyout clause in his contract, making him a coach that Tottenham can feasibly acquire.
