The check swing call nearly ruined a nail-biting match that was decided by a one-point difference.

Kiwoom Heroes' manager Hong Won-ki, who had been in a slump with a franchise record of 10 consecutive losses, was ejected after expressing his anger over the check swing call. Following the call, Kiwoom found themselves in a bases-loaded, two outs situation but escaped the crisis with a stellar catch by second baseman Kim Tae-jin, winning 1-0 and breaking their 10-game losing streak.

On the 31st, the game between Doosan Bears and Kiwoom Heroes took place at Gocheok Sky Dome. Kiwoom scored first with a solo home run by Choi Joo-hwan in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 1–0 until the seventh inning.

In the eighth inning, during Doosan's attack, Doosan's Lim Jong-sung swung at the fastball from Kiwoom's starter Rosenberg after a 3 balls-1 strike count but stopped. It appeared the bat had gone around, but first base umpire Choi Su-won declared it a no swing, resulting in a walk.

Manager Hong Won-ki rushed out of the dugout and protested forcefully towards the first base umpire. Subsequently, the replay shown on the TV broadcast revealed that the bat had indeed fully rotated. Analyst Park Jae-hong noted, “The bat went around, and there was clearly a reason behind Hong Won-ki's strong appeal.”

The swing trajectory of right-handed Lim Jong-sung was clearly visible from the first base dugout. Manager Hong Won-ki was confident in the swing and protested strongly to the umpires, resulting in his ejection. Kiwoom felt aggrieved by both the walk and the manager's ejection. In a one-point game, the full count and a walk make a significant difference.

After the game resumed, Kiwoom replaced starter Rosenberg with closer Joo Seung-woo. Joo Seung-woo struck out Kim In-tae, resulting in two outs with a runner on second.

After that, they issued consecutive walks to Jung Soo-bin and Cave, leading to a bases-loaded, two outs crisis. Yang Eui-ji's hit was a potential hit that went past second base, but second baseman Kim Tae-jin made a picturesque defensive play to catch it and threw it to first for an out. They were nearly overturned due to the bad call but managed to stop it with a stellar defense. Had they been reversed, the fallout from the bad call would have been substantial.

In the ninth inning, Kiwoom's Won Jong-hyun came in as the third pitcher and managed to secure the 1-0 victory by getting a ground ball out and a strikeout during a one out, runner on second threat. They dramatically escaped the 10-game losing streak.

Recently, complaints regarding check swing calls have been growing louder at the scene. On the 27th, during the game between Hanwha Eagles and LG Twins held at Jamsil Stadium, there was also a check swing call.

Trailing 1-2 in the seventh inning, Hanwha's pitcher Kim Beom-Su threw a slider on the fifth pitch in a 1 ball-2 strike count against Lee Young-bin after one out. Lee Young-bin attempted to swing but seemed to stop, although it appeared the bat had gone around.

The home plate umpire checked the check swing with the third base umpire, who ruled it a no swing. The replay on the TV broadcast showed that the bat went around. Hanwha manager Kim Kyung-moon came out to appeal to the home plate and third base umpires, but the ruling could not be overturned.

The next day, Hanwha manager Kim Kyung-moon and LG manager Youm Kyoung-youb argued that "from the second half of the season, we should implement video review for check swings." Currently, video review for check swings is being conducted in the Futures League.

Manager Youm said, “I also mentioned this in the KBO meeting. It would be great if it could be implemented after the first half ends. The managers generally have that thought.” Manager Kim raised his voice, stating, “KBO should quickly implement video review for check swings as they are doing for other matters.”
