Chairman Daniel Levy has seized the opportunity to acquire a successor for Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham). Tottenham is seeking to sign free agent forward Leroy Sané (29, Bayern Munich).
The British media outlet Sky Sports reported on 29th (Korean time) that "Sané is on Tottenham's acquisition list. Sané can be a long-term replacement for Son Heung-min."
Sané has not performed to expectations this season at Bayern. He briefly missed matches early in the season due to an injury, but fortunately, it was not a long-term injury. Across all competitions, he has played 45 matches, scoring 13 goals and providing 6 assists.
These are worse statistics than last season. He recorded a remarkable 23 attacking points in the 2023-2024 season, having played 42 matches, scoring 10 goals and providing 13 assists.
The British outlet TBR Football noted that "Although the statistics are not as good as the previous season, Sané has still left impressive figures despite not consistently playing."
It also stated, "Sané has quick speed and creative dribbling ability. He plays excellently on the left side, similar to Son Heung-min. He shows strengths in dribbling and attacking developments," asserting that he can be a substitute for Son Heung-min.
It added, "Sané shows greater impact on the left wing, which utilizes space widely, aligning with the tactics of Coach Postecoglou."
Additionally, the media pointed out Son Heung-min's struggles. "This season, Son Heung-min has only managed 7 goals in the Premier League. A decline in physical condition and performance has coincided. Coach Postecoglou also acknowledged during the season that 'Son Heung-min looks fatigued.' He even excluded Son Heung-min from the starting lineup in the Europa League final," stating, "The two players have similar play styles. Sané excels in dribbling and scoring ability compared to Son Heung-min, while Son Heung-min shows superiority in ball carrying and chance creation. If Sané joins Tottenham, he could grow into a key resource in place of Son Heung-min."
Moreover, it projected that "Above all, Sané is currently a free agent. His signing without transfer fee burdens is drawing Tottenham's interest."
Sané's contract with Bayern will end after this season.
In 2014, Sané began his professional career by making his first-team debut at Schalke 04 in the German Bundesliga. In the summer of 2016, he transferred to Manchester City in the Premier League, rapidly rising as a promising talent.
He experienced league titles under Coach Pep Guardiola in the 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 seasons. Notably, he won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2017–2018 season.
However, in August 2019, he suffered a long-term injury to his anterior cruciate ligament during the Community Shield match. The following summer, in 2020, he transferred to Bayern.
In his first season at Bayern, 2020–2021, Sané contributed to the Bundesliga title.
Sané is also a key player for the German national team. He made his debut for the Germany A national team in a friendly against France in November 2015 and competed in UEFA Euro 2016. However, he faced the disappointment of being excluded from the final roster for the 2018 Russia World Cup.
Since then, he has returned to the national team, participating in the UEFA Nations League and the Euro 2020 finals, becoming a cornerstone of the German attack.
