This is a tragic incident.
Liverpool held a parade in the city to celebrate their Premier League victory on the 27th (Korea time). However, during the parade, a vehicle crashed into the crowd, turning the event chaotic, resulting in over 50 injuries.
According to the British 'BBC', a 53-year-old white man from the UK driving the vehicle was arrested at the scene. Local police reported that it is not related to terrorism and is being treated as an accidental incident. Among the injured, four are children, and of the 27 who were transported to the hospital, four are still in critical condition.
The area around Water Street, where the incident occurred, remains closed. Steve Rotheram, the mayor of Liverpool, said, "We are looking into how the vehicle was able to enter a closed road at such high speed," and Keir Starmer, the UK Prime Minister, also reported that he is being briefed on the incident.
Liverpool FC stated, "We extend our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this incident. We are currently working closely with Merseyside police and will not spare any support for emergency services."
Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media show the moment the vehicle rapidly sped into the crowd. The footage also depicts police and citizens surrounding the vehicle to restrain the driver after the incident. Some analyzed that the tragedy was provoked by certain members of the crowd first agitating the driver.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot chose not to attend the ceremony, stating, "I judged that it would not be appropriate to attend the award ceremony in such a situation," adding, "I know this decision is not taken lightly, but I believe it is the right choice considering the seriousness of the situation." He reiterated that this was not a decision made lightly, but that it was clearly the right choice given the gravity of the circumstances, asking for understanding on this matter.
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher also posted on his social media (SNS) along with a photo on the day of the incident. The photo showed the area around Liverpool Town Hall covered in debris, and he expressed concern by saying, "The end of a horrific day... I pray everyone is safe."
Trent Alexander-Arnold, a product of Liverpool's youth system, also expressed his sorrow through social media. He said, "All those affected by this tragic event and the entire city are in my heart. I hope all the injured recover fully. And Liverpool will rise together as always."
