The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to three games after a lengthy battle in extra innings.
Kim Hye-sung, of the Dodgers, was substituted as a pinch runner in the 11th inning, adding a hit. The Dodgers won 7-5 against the New York Mets in an away game held at New York City's Citi Field on the 24th (Korea Standard Time).
The Dodgers, with left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the mound, lined up designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, shortstop Mookie Betts, first baseman Freddie Freeman, catcher Will Smith, right fielder Teoscar Hernández, third baseman Max Muncy, center fielder Andy Paholes, left fielder Michael Conforto, and second baseman Tommy Edman.
The Mets countered with shortstop Francisco Lindor, designated hitter Starling Marte, right fielder Juan Soto, first baseman Pete Alonso, left fielder Brandon Nimmo, center fielder Tyrone Taylor, catcher Francisco Alvarez, third baseman Brett Baty, and second baseman Luisangel Acuña in their starting lineup. The starting pitcher was Griffin Canning.
In the third inning, taking advantage of a two-out, bases-loaded situation, the Dodgers scored the first run with an infield hit by Smith, and in the continued bases-loaded situation, Hernández's two-run hit extended the lead to 3-0. The Mets struck back with a solo home run by Baty in the third inning with one out, reducing the deficit to one point, and in the fourth inning, with one out and a runner on third, Alonso's sacrifice fly made it 2-3.
Needing additional runs, the Dodgers extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth inning with consecutive timely hits by Muncy and Paholes with two outs and runners on first and second. The Mets, trailing by three runs in the ninth inning with one out and runners on first and second, closed the gap to one point with McNeil's clearing triple. In the continued one out situation on third base, Taylor's timely hit brought the game back to even.
Ultimately, the game moved into a showdown, and the Dodgers seized the advantage in the 13th inning with Teoscar Hernández's timely hit for a 6-5 lead. Paholes then sealed the deal with a sacrifice fly.
Kim Hye-sung did not make the starting lineup that day but was introduced as a pinch runner in the 11th inning and added a hit in the 13th.
Dodgers starter Kershaw pitched well, throwing two innings with one walk and one strikeout without allowing any runs, but left the mound early due to rain. The Mets' starter Canning recorded 2⅔ innings with one hit allowed, four walks, one strikeout, and three earned runs.
Meanwhile, Ohtani will take part in live pitching on the 25th. Manager Dave Roberts noted about Ohtani's first live pitching, "It’s a significant advancement in Ohtani's return to pitching," adding, "So far, the recovery process has been smooth. Even with light throws, his maximum speed reached 153 km/h."
He also added, "Everyone wants to see Ohtani pitch against batters. If he seriously increases his pace, it’s something to really look forward to."
