Six years have passed, but it still remains in his heart. Son Heung-min (33, Tottenham) recalled the nightmare of the 2019 Champions League final once again, a day before the Europa League final. The emotions surrounding 'that decision,' which occurred less than 30 seconds into the match, were still vivid.

On the 21st (Korean time), Son Heung-min spoke at the official news conference for the UEFA Europa League final held in Bilbao, Spain, saying, "I still don’t believe it was handball." This was not a simple sentiment but clear distrust in the decision itself.

In June 2019, Tottenham lost 0-2 to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final, held at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain, failing in their first 'Big Ear challenge.'

The variable that emerged just 24 seconds into the match changed the entire flow. A cross attempted by Sadio Mané of Liverpool hit Moussa Sissoko's arm, and the referee declared a penalty kick without hesitation. Mohamed Salah converted, forcing Tottenham to play from behind early in the match.

That decision also sparked major controversy during the early days of VAR implementation. Tottenham argued that Sissoko had his arm raised in a natural position, and that the ball hit another part of his body before contacting his arm, but this was not accepted. However, from an objective perspective, it clearly appeared to be a handball foul.

He did not deny that moment was a critical turning point for him, even six years later.

Son Heung-min stated, "It was my first final stage, and I was very nervous," adding, "Now, as the captain, I am preparing more calmly and composedly." He noted that this Europa League final could present another opportunity, yet it seemed he still carried memories of 'that day' in his heart.

During the final at that time, Son Heung-min played the full match and threatened Liverpool's goal, but the match ended with Divock Origi's late goal sealing the victory. Ultimately, he failed to achieve his first European title across all his challenges in Germany and England, which remains a moment in his career.

At the news conference that day, Son Heung-min declared, "Now, a realistic opportunity has come to challenge for the title again. I am focused on not repeating the past." Whether he can overcome 'the nightmare of that day' on another stage will be determined in the final approaching in just one day.

Son Heung-min's pursuit of a trophy on the European stage is still ongoing.
