"There was a significant gain."
Doosan Bears manager Lee Seung-yeop welcomed the rainout. The match against Kia Tigers, scheduled for June 16 at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field, was canceled due to rain. Although a doubleheader must be played on the 17th, the cancellation was like a much-needed respite for the Doosan players who had fought a grueling three-game series against Hanwha Eagles earlier in the week.
Doosan won all three matches. In the first game, Kim Tae-kyun blew a save and, after going into extra innings, ended Hanwha's 13-game winning streak. They also celebrated victories in the second and third games, overcoming difficult situations. Although starting pitchers Jack Logan and Choi Seung-yong were hit by batted balls and had to leave the game early, the bullpen pitchers and the cohesion of the batting lineup led to three consecutive wins.
Meeting at the Champions Field, Lee noted, "We had tough games from day one, going into extra innings. In the second and third games, the starting pitchers left early, using up a lot of the bullpen. Yesterday, aside from (the key pitchers), it was all rest. (Park) Jung-soo did exceptionally well in the middle, and (Park) Shin-ji and rookie (Yang) Jae-hoon managed to block cleanly," and he expressed his gratitude.
He also attributed the unexpected three wins to the players. "The players worked extremely hard. The staff also prepared diligently. The veterans moved well, and naturally, the juniors followed suit. There were crises and mistakes in the three-game series, but since the young players performed well, the team's atmosphere became bright," he conveyed his appreciation.
He added, "Three consecutive wins were truly a significant gain and a meaningful victory. It was a tough three games, and the players are currently in a state of exhaustion. During such times, the rainout provides a welcome rest, so it doesn't seem bad."
Doosan removed Choi Seung-yong, who started the previous day, from the roster. His left middle fingernail was broken and the skin was torn, making it difficult for him to return to form later. Lee stated, "It seems we will need to rest until the wound heals. If things go as planned, he will return in about ten days."
Doosan will have a doubleheader against Kia on the 17th starting at 2 p.m. Cole Irvin will start in the first game, and rookie Hong Min-kyu will pitch in the second. Kia is set to start James Neale in the first game and Yang Hyun-jong in the second.
