Will Jamil Woney retire in style with his last championship ring in the Korean Basketball League (KBL)?
On the 15th, Seoul SK defeated Changwon LG 54-51 in Game 6 of the 2024-25 KCC professional basketball championship series held at Changwon Gymnasium. After three consecutive losses, SK has now achieved three straight victories, leveling the series. The final Game 7 will be held in Seoul on the 17th.
SK's ace Woney struggled with only 8 points until the third quarter. He effectively defended rival Asem Marey, limiting him to just 5 points, but it was an uncharacteristically weak offensive performance from Woney.
As the fourth quarter neared its end, SK was trailing by 3 points and in a crisis. At that moment, Woney hit a 3-point shot that swished through the net. He scored 7 points in the fourth quarter alone, becoming a hero with 15 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks.
After the game, Woney said, 'It was a great game. Everyone did well. We were on the brink with three losses. We didn't perform in the first three games, but we won the last three as a team. Now there's only one game left. I will do my best to win the championship.'
This is the first time in Woney's basketball career that he has come back from three losses to achieve three straight wins. He is also attempting a reverse sweep for the first time. He noted, 'Defense wasn't good in the first two games. Although 70 points is a low score in the playoffs, I believed we could win if we played good defense. My role is to support my teammates with defense and rebounds.'
Woney has announced that this season will be his last. He has a desire to win but not an aspiration for MVP. He said, 'I don't care about retirement. I am focused only on the last game. If SK wins the championship, the MVP should go to Coach Hickman. I analyzed a lot of defense and had many conversations with the players. The coaching staff has prepared well. Honestly, I don't care who gets the MVP.'
