Legend Xabi Alonso is returning to Real Madrid as a coach.
Spain's 'Marca' reported on the 9th (Korea time) that "Real Madrid will part ways with coach Carlo Ancelotti at the end of the La Liga season on May 25 and transition to coach Xabi Alonso's system."
Carlo Ancelotti has resigned due to the responsibility of being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Ancelotti leaves Real after lifting 15 trophies, including 3 Champions League titles, 3 Club World Cup titles, 3 Super Cup titles, 2 La Liga titles, 2 Copa del Rey titles, and 2 Spanish Super Cup titles.
The new coach is Xabi Alonso, who was a legend at Real. He earned recognition for his leadership by leading Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten championship last season. Bayern Munich, whose 11-year consecutive championship was thwarted, reclaimed the trophy this season thanks to players like Kim Min-jae.
Initially, Alonso was expected to lead Real Madrid starting in July. However, he will take the reins right away at the Club World Cup held in the U.S. in June.
BBC reported, "Real Madrid will hand over the coaching position to Alonso starting from the Club World Cup. Alonso is expected to move to Madrid on June 1 to join the club. He will face Saudi club Al Hilal in Miami on June 18."
Real modified its initial plan to participate in the Club World Cup with an interim coach. Alonso will make his coaching debut at the Club World Cup.
