As Liverpool claimed the Premier League title this season, experts who were completely wrong in their predictions drew attention by engaging in a public debate about Arsenal's failure to win the championship.
According to England's 'The Sun' on the 12th (Korean time), Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher (47) and Manchester United (Man U) legend Gary Neville (50) appeared side by side on England's 'Sky Sports' to evaluate Arsenal's 'trophy-less' season.
On that day, Liverpool and Arsenal drew 2-2 in the 36th round of the 2024-2025 English Premier League (EPL). As commentators on Sky Sports, Carragher and Neville clashed over the topic of Arsenal, led by manager Mikel Arteta.
Carragher said, "It's clear why Arsenal need a striker just by looking at the current situation. They will definitely strengthen in the summer," and then asked Neville, "But did you talk about that before the season started? Knowing about the striker issue, why did you pick that team as a title contender?"
Carragher continued to attack Neville, saying, "You said before the season started that Arsenal would win. But now to say they need a striker and that injuries prevented them from winning is not acceptable."
Carragher added, "What I want to say is that if you predicted they would win before the season started, saying that 'Manager Arteta should have brought in a striker' halfway or at the end of the season does not make sense."
In response, Neville rebutted, "On August 15, the transfer market had three weeks left. I thought Arsenal would bring in a striker during the winter transfer window. But in the end, they did not."
Carragher then raised his voice, asking, "Who? Who exactly were they supposed to bring in?" He emphasized, "You picked Arsenal as the title-winning team, and now to say that Manager Arteta made a mistake is unacceptable."
Neville countered, "Oh, Carragher. Since last summer, everyone, even Arsenal fans, has been saying that they need a striker for the past 2-3 years," and acknowledged, "I also thought Arsenal would win this season. I was really disappointed that they did not win this season."
"It's not because of Liverpool. Liverpool did really well. The problem is Arsenal. They should have been closer to winning but instead regressed," he explained. "They should have brought in a striker last summer, but they did not."
"I have been saying this for 2-3 years. I'm not saying it suddenly now," he emphasized, "Arsenal must have brought in a striker."
Both experts were completely off with their predictions for the title winner this season. Carragher predicted that not his beloved Liverpool, but Manchester City (Man City) would win and achieve a league four-peat. He anticipated Liverpool would finish in third place.
Neville believed that Arsenal would win. However, he expected Liverpool would fall to fifth place and was optimistic that his team, Manchester United, would finish in third.
Arsenal is currently in second place in the league this season. They were eliminated in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League and did not advance past the semifinals of the EFL Cup. They were knocked out in the third round of the Football Association (FA) Cup, finishing the season without any trophies.
