A showdown between two teams desperate for victory has been confirmed. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United (Man U) are set to meet in the final of the UEFA Europa League (UEL) this season.
Tottenham defeated Bodo/Glimt (Norway) 2-0 in the second leg of the 2024-2025 season UEL semifinals held at the Asmir Stadium in Bodo, Norway, on the 9th.
Following a 3-1 victory in the first leg at home, Tottenham secured a two-goal win without conceding away, leading with an aggregate score of 5-1 to advance to the final.
On the same day, Manchester United also confirmed their place in the final after defeating Athletic Bilbao 4-1 in the second leg of the UEL semifinals held at Old Trafford in Manchester, England.
Manchester United, who won the first leg away 3-0, progressed through the semifinals with an aggregate score of 7-1.
From the early stages of the match, Tottenham put pressure on Bodo. They took control by blocking the opponent's attacking plays from a high position. Bodo increased their possession but failed to create decisive opportunities.
The first half ended without a score. In the 16th minute, Udogie's low cross from the left side was blocked by the goalkeeper, and in the 23rd minute, Poro's curling free kick was also stopped by the opposing goalkeeper.
Bodo also created several threatening moments but lacked finishing.
In the second half, Bodo made an early substitution to change their attacking line. Tottenham responded by bringing on Mathis Tel for Richarlison.
The balance was broken in the 63rd minute. Tottenham took the lead. In a corner kick situation, Romero headed the ball down, which Solanke connected with a diving shot to shake the net. The aggregate score became 4-1.
Gaining momentum, Tottenham sealed the match. In the 69th minute, Pedro Poro's cross deflected off the defense and was pulled directly into the net. Poro celebrated with a 'dart ceremony' in memory of James Maddison, who is out for the season.
On this day, Tottenham achieved a full 2-0 victory against Bodo, booking their place in the final.
According to British media 'Football London,' Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham's manager, said after the match, "We've talked a lot about how challenging this away game is over the last few days. The players were truly remarkable. I felt they were well-prepared today. The staff also assisted the players well in understanding what we needed to do."
When asked, 'Is it not a point of pride for the manager to advance to a European tournament final?' he replied, "I can say that. It’s a good opportunity. I've been in European football for four years, and many who have been here much longer than I have never made it to a final. So we must appreciate this opportunity. I didn't have time to think deeply because I was focused on the match tonight. Most importantly, I’m really happy for the players, the staff, and the fans. A few hundred fans came to the stadium today, and I think they will remember this night for a lifetime. And we've given hope to thousands of fans at home that we can achieve something special this season."
To the comment, 'Both Tottenham and Man U are having tough seasons, yet they've made it to the finals,' Postecoglou said, "I know our league performance hasn't been great. But that doesn’t diminish the significance of reaching the UEL final. Teams that finished 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the Premier League have often not reached the final. Why should we downplay this achievement? It doesn't matter if we are struggling in the league. We’ve defeated teams that will advance to the Champions League next season on our way to the final."
Manchester United hold the position that even if they win the UEL, it will not cover up their league struggles. When asked, 'Does winning the UEL mean something different for Tottenham?' Postecoglou replied, "Why should I care what Man U thinks? You should ask that to the Man U manager. I have said from the beginning that this tournament is important."
He then told the questioning reporter, "Honestly, you've probably watched this club longer than I have," and added, "So you know how much meaning a trophy holds."
The reporter said, "It has enormous significance." Postecoglou replied, "That's right. That’s the answer. The question already held the answer within itself. Right now, the atmosphere is such that people are afraid it might become a reality. That's why they try to downplay it. They want to say, 'Since this season hasn't been great, we don't deserve to win,' or compare it to Man U."
Finally, he emphasized, "The final is a completely different game. It requires a different approach than what we've done so far. This season, our squad has gone through many adversities and has overcome them well. Many key players have been absent, but we united as one and believed in what we were trying to accomplish. So I believe we can do well even against strong opponents in the final."
Manchester United aims to win the UEL for the first time in eight years since the 2016-2017 season. At that time, under manager José Mourinho, Manchester United secured the title by beating Ajax in the final. This time, they aim for their second UEL title in club history alongside manager Amorim.
After the match, manager Amorim stated, "I'm already feeling stressed because of the final. I believe that the minimum we can do for the fans is to win the UEL," and added, "If we don’t win, it means nothing. Just reaching the final isn't enough."
He then acknowledged his shortcomings and apologized. Manager Amorim said, "At this moment, I feel I should have been a better manager. The team should have been better, too. (But what’s clear is) we are continuously working hard."
With a strong consideration for the fans, manager Amorim stated, "Giving something to the fans is more important than adding a title to my career. That’s why I need to win the UEL."
Before the final, Manchester United must play two more league matches against West Ham and Chelsea. However, currently sitting 15th, their league performance has become largely irrelevant, so Manchester United is focusing all its efforts on preparing for the UEL final.
Manager Amorim said, "Right now, I am only thinking about the next match. We need to manage so that there are no injuries before the final."
This season, Manchester United has faced Tottenham three times and lost all three matches. Manager Amorim stated, "Statistically, losing to one team four times in a row is rare. I once reached a final as a player but lost. However, I am confident that this time will be different. We need to analyze the game well, luck will be necessary, and decisiveness will be important."
