The transfer of Tottenham's key defender Cristian Romero (27, Tottenham) has been confirmed.
Tottenham Hotspur News reported, "Key defender Romero has agreed to a five-year contract with Atletico Madrid (hereafter ATM). Tottenham plans to meet with ATM in a few days for detailed discussions."
This is shocking news. Romero has been limited to 18 appearances this season due to injury but has started every match as a key defender for Tottenham. It is hard to imagine Tottenham's defense without Romero.
Tottenham has fallen to 16th place in the Premier League this season. Romero is only thinking about escaping Tottenham.
Tottenham Hotspur News noted, "Tottenham is aiming to win the Europa League. If Tottenham wins, it would be their first victory in 17 years. However, Romero is only interested in the transfer. He has already agreed to a five-year contract with ATM. Tottenham will not be able to keep him."
Tottenham has nominated Bournemouth center-back Dean Huysden as Romero's successor. Huysden is known to be significantly better defensively than Romero. He is also a defender with offensive capabilities, having scored 3 goals this season.
This season, Huysden is a player with excellent durability, recording nearly twice the playing time as Romero. However, several other teams, in addition to Tottenham, are also targeting him.
