Can LG really win in Changwon?
LG defeated Seoul SK 76-71 in the second game of the 2024-25 KCC Professional Basketball Championship held at Jamsil Students' Gymnasium on the 7th. With two consecutive wins on enemy territory, LG needs just two more wins to achieve its first championship victory since its inception.
Kal Tamayo shone with 27 points in the second game, following his 24 points in the first game. Marey ended with 12 points but grabbed 14 rebounds. Heo Il-young hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points against his former team. Yoo Gi-sang scored 14 points with four 3-pointers and a crucial free throw.
SK's Gomez surprised with 19 points, but primary players Warner (17 points, 12 rebounds) and Kim Sun-hyung (10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, 0/6 from 3-point range) underperformed. SK's 3-point shooting was a key factor in their loss, hitting just 7 of 34 attempts for 21 percent.
After the victory, LG Head Coach Jo Sang-hyun smiled broadly and said, "It's really tough. I always thought SK was a strong team. I thought SK would come out stronger today. The diligent defense was approval. Yoo Gi-sang's last shot was luck on our side," showing his humility.
I didn't expect to give up 19 points to Gomez," Coach Jo noted. "I didn’t see that coming. We need to prepare for the third game. I considered a small lineup. If Gomez comes in, the focus on Warner will be dispersed," he cautioned.
Heo Il-young, who contributed 12 points during crucial moments, is also appreciated. Coach Jo Sang-hyun said, "Since bringing him in this year, I assigned him a leadership role. I'm thankful for bringing the team this far."
Now, if LG wins both the 3rd and 4th games to be played in Changwon, it will achieve its first championship. Coach Jo stated, "I will give the players enough rest, have video meetings, and manage their condition. SK is a very good team. My hope is to finish it (in Changwon)."
