Could another rare record be born? Jonas Urvich (22, Bayern Munich) could become the protagonist who claims two league titles in a single season. For now, one has been completed.
Bayern announced on its official website on the 5th (Korean time) that "Bayern is the champion of the 2024-2025 season! Bayern has once again become the German champion! Leverkusen, after drawing with Freiburg, can no longer rise to the top of the Bundesliga. This marks Bayern's 34th time becoming the German champion, and it's a reward for a remarkable season.
Bayer 04 Leverkusen drew 2-2 against SC Freiburg in the 32nd round of the 2024-2025 Bundesliga held at Europa Park Stadion in Freiburg, Germany, on the same day.
As a result, the title challenge for second-placed Leverkusen has ended. With 68 points (19 wins, 11 draws, 2 losses), they were unable to sufficiently narrow the point gap with first-placed Bayern Munich (76 points). With Leverkusen failing to add 3 points, Bayern automatically confirmed the league title for this season, regardless of the results of the remaining two matches.
Thanks to this, Bayern achieved its 34th Bundesliga title, extending its record for the most championships in history. They successfully reclaimed the 'Meisterschale (Bundesliga championship trophy)' that they had lost to Leverkusen, who had gone unbeaten last season.
The most noteworthy player is none other than Harry Kane. He broke his long-standing curse of not winning a title, achieving his first career victory. While he is recognized as a world-class striker, he has notably been without a title. He repeatedly finished second with both Tottenham and the England national team, and last season, Bayern's 11-year Bundesliga winning streak was even snapped.
Because of this, Kane wanted the title more than anyone else. He noted through Bild in February that "Many people are still talking about the fact that I haven't won a title in my career. I think it's time to silence a few of them," solidifying his determination to win.
After many twists and turns, Kane realized his dream. He has been instrumental in Bayern's victory, scoring 24 goals and providing 7 assists in 29 league games this season. As a result, he has finally lifted a trophy for the first time in 14 years since making his professional debut in a Tottenham uniform in 2011.
Kane, who secured his first title, was happier than anyone else. He uploaded a video on social media celebrating with his teammates over beers and singing the iconic song "We are the Champions" by the famous British band Queen. He also celebrated by popping champagne with Eric Dier, who he has been with since his Tottenham days.
The 2003-born goalkeeper Urvich is another protagonist. He too lifted a trophy for the first time in his life. Urvich joined Bayern in January after leaving his former team Cologne and has been playing as a backup goalkeeper. He has consistently guarded Bayern's goal in place of the injured Manuel Neuer, contributing to the team's victory.
But that’s not the end. Urvich may lift another trophy this season. The Cologne team, where he played in the first half of the season, is also competing for the 2. Bundesliga (second division) title. Currently, Cologne (55 points) is one point behind the leaders Hamburger SV (56 points).
If Cologne manages to overtake Hamburger SV at the last moment and become champions, Urvich will add another title to his career. He qualifies for a championship medal having played 10 games this season in a Cologne uniform. It’s a rare opportunity to win a league title twice in one year, something many players never achieve until they retire.
According to Germany's Abend Zeitung, "Urvich could be the only double champion at Bayern. It’s a rare stroke of luck. He might celebrate league titles twice in the same season, as Bayern sits on the Bundesliga throne and Cologne could become the champions of the second division."
Urvich also wishes for the success of his former team, Cologne. He said, "I still maintain a good relationship with the Cologne players. I would be really happy if Cologne wins the second division title."
If Urvich's dream comes true, he would become the third player in history to simultaneously conquer both the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. Pasi Rautiainen and Frank Hartmann had previously achieved this remarkable feat, and not surprisingly, both were affiliated with Bayern.
Finnish midfielder Rautiainen played one game in the Bundesliga for Bayern during the 1980-1981 season before transferring to Werder Bremen during the winter transfer window. Afterward, both Bayern and Bremen reached the pinnacle of the league.
Frank Hartmann, a former West German striker, did the same. He played one game in the Bundesliga for Bayern during the 1986-1987 season before returning to his former team Hannover 96 to help secure a 2. Bundesliga title.
