Harry Kane (31, Bayern Munich) has finally lifted his first trophy since turning professional. Jurgen Klinsmann (60), a former Bayern player and a person many South Korean football fans would like to forget, applauded him.
Bayern announced on its official website on the 5th that they have become the German champions for the 2024-2025 season. They confirmed their title after Bayer Leverkusen drew against Freiburg.
On this day, Bayer Leverkusen drew 2-2 with Freiburg in the 32nd round of the 2024-2025 Bundesliga away match held at Europa-Park Stadion in Freiburg, Germany. Leverkusen, with 68 points, could not close the gap with Bayern, who are in first place with 76 points.
With two league matches left, Bayern secured an early victory. They achieved their 34th Bundesliga title, breaking the all-time record for the most championships. They also reclaimed the Meisterschale (championship trophy), which they lost to Leverkusen last year.
For Bayern fans, the moment Freiburg scored the opening goal felt like a festival. In the 44th minute of the first half, Maximilian Eggestein's powerful shot from a distance found the corner of the goal, making it 1-0.
Additionally, luck was on Freiburg's side as the second half began. In the 3rd minute of the second half, Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Incapie scored an own goal, giving Freiburg a 2-0 lead.
However, Leverkusen did not back down. They launched a counterattack. In the 37th minute of the second half, Florian Wirtz scored with a right-footed shot after a personal breakthrough, and in stoppage time, Jonathand Tague shook the net with a header, bringing the score to 2-2. However, they could not secure a comeback. With the end of the match, Bayern's championship was confirmed.
According to the BBC, former Bayern forward Jurgen Klinsmann said, "Kane deserves to enjoy this victory. His skills have been undeniable for the past decade. The records are amazing, and I think he will maintain this level going forward. He is still in top condition and hungry."
Until this day, Kane's career had been trophyless, which did not match his reputation as England's all-time top goal scorer. In his youth, he struggled to rank among the top on his team, and after his professional debut in 2010, he went on several loan spells in lower leagues. He started to flourish once established at Tottenham, where he scored a total of 213 goals in the Premier League. This is the second-highest record, following Alan Shearer.
Kane was the league's top scorer three times at Tottenham but had no wins to show for it. He lost in the Champions League final, was a runner-up in the League Cup twice, and fell short in the league against Leicester and Chelsea. He also experienced a fourth-place finish in the World Cup and a runner-up finish at the Euros with the national team.
Klinsmann added, "Everyone told Kane he needed to leave Tottenham to win. I also experienced my first victory at Bayern after leaving Tottenham."
In August 2023, Kane signed with Munich, generating a transfer fee of 100 million euros (approximately 156.8 billion won).
Last season, he saw a good chance of winning at Bayern, who were on an 11-year Bundesliga championship run. However, Bayern lost in the German Super Cup last season and was eliminated in the German Cup by the third-division team Saarbrücken. In the Bundesliga, they finished third, falling behind Leverkusen, and were defeated by Real Madrid in the Champions League.
"Trophyless" continued at Bayern, but Kane did not back down. He finally reached the pinnacle after two seasons in the Bundesliga.
