Reports surrounding the next manager position of Bayer 04 Leverkusen are conflicting.
German outlet Bild+ reported on the 3rd (Korea time) that "there was another real candidate for Xabi Alonso's successor," mentioning that Cesc Fabregas, the head coach of Como 1907, is a strong contender for the Leverkusen managerial position.
On the 2nd, local prominent source Kicker reported that negotiations between Leverkusen and Erik ten Hag had already made significant progress, but Bild presented a completely different scenario. In the midst of confusion, Leverkusen seems to be quietly wrapping up preparations for the next regime.
Kicker reported that "Leverkusen has already earmarked Ten Hag as the next manager in preparation for Alonso's move to Real Madrid, and negotiations have nearly reached the final stage."
As has always been the case, Leverkusen is also being evaluated for its 'silent replacement' this time. This has evoked memories of the previous swift appointment of Alonso after the dismissal of Gerardo Seoane in the fall of 2022.
However, Bild presented the opposite content that day. The outlet claimed, "Ten Hag is on the list but not included in the final candidate pool. Fabregas, who has led Como, is a much more likely candidate," adding weight to their report by revealing evidence that actual contact had taken place beyond just a simple candidate list.
Fabregas, like Alonso, is a world-class midfielder from Spain who showcased top-level skills at Arsenal, FC Barcelona, and Chelsea.
Currently, he is a rookie manager who led the Italian second division team Como to promotion to the first division. He is regarded as a suitable successor to Alonso due to his young age and distinct football philosophy.
Bild analyzed, "Leverkusen prefers a manager similar to Alonso. In terms of sensory communication ability with the players, Fabregas has the upper hand over Ten Hag."
Leverkusen achieved an unbeaten championship in the Bundesliga last season under Alonso's regime and also achieved runner-up in the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Europa League. Alonso's move to Real is now seen as a matter of time. However, the name of his successor remains unclear.
Whether the Ten Hag regime is quietly being prepared as reported by Kicker or if Fabregas is the likely card as claimed by Bild is still shrouded in mist. One thing is clear, though: Leverkusen is once again signaling a 'fast and quiet' managerial change.
