Eric Dier's release will leave a bitter feeling in Harry Kane's heart.
With Eric Dier (31) of Bayern Munich set to join AS Monaco after the season, former German national team player and current commentator Dietmar Hamann (52) has strongly criticized Bayern's decision.
The global soccer media outlet Goal.com reported on the 2nd (Korea time) that Hamann stated in a contribution to Sky Germany that he found Dier's departure from the team to be incomprehensible. He expressed regret that Bayern could have probably retained the 'outstanding defender' Dier if they had approached the situation a bit more creatively.
Dier joined Bayern on loan from Tottenham in January 2024 and then converted to a permanent transfer two months later, signing a contract until the 2024-2025 season. However, he faced limited playing opportunities as he fell behind Kim Min-jae and Dayot Upamecano in the starting competition, and he did not earn clear trust from former coach Thomas Tuchel or in the Vincent Kompany regime.
Hamann had a different view. He said, 'Dier was a player who was absolutely necessary in the latter part of the season. He never gave a negative impression when he played. That in itself is the greatest virtue as a Bayern defender,' adding, 'He is a resource who can also score and plays a role in maintaining the team atmosphere internally.'
He continued, 'He didn't show dissatisfaction when he wasn't playing, and when given the opportunity, he performed beyond expectations. He displayed impressive defense alongside Josip Stanišić in recent big matches. His departure is a significant loss as the team prepares for the Club World Cup.'
Hamann noted, 'Bayern might not have been willing to offer Dier the same terms that Monaco proposed, specifically a 2+1 year contract. However, they could have taken a more creative approach,' pointing out the club's lack of flexibility.
Above all, Hamann pointed out the psychological shock for Harry Kane, Dier's close friend and Bayern's ace. He said, 'Dier's departure may leave a bitter feeling in Kane's heart,' adding, 'Of course, Kane is a professional. He is contracted with Bayern, not Dier, but such incidents inevitably affect the psychology of players.'
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich is set to face RB Leipzig on the 3rd, and a victory in this match could bring them closer to the Bundesliga title. Dier is scheduled to be part of that final journey, but come summer, he will leave Munich for the French Ligue 1.
