Real Madrid has extended its contract with legendary Luka Modric (40) for two weeks.
Real Madrid announced, "Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez's contracts have been extended until July 13. Both players will be able to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup."
Modric and Vazquez were set to finish their contracts with Real Madrid on June 30 and become free agents. However, due to concerns about a lack of manpower, FIFA allowed the club to sign short-term contracts with the players. As a result, Real Madrid decided to keep both players for two more weeks.
With the two-week extension, Modric will receive his previous weekly wage from Real for an additional two weeks. However, Modric will not participate in Real's summer tour.
Modric wants to play for Croatia in the 2026 North American World Cup. However, Real Madrid found Modric's high salary burdensome and wanted to part ways with him due to his reduced role on the team. Ultimately, it is unavoidable for Modric to transfer to another team this summer.
The Club World Cup, featuring 32 teams including Real Madrid, will be held from June 14 to July 13 in 12 cities across the United States. K League champions Ulsan will also participate.
