Bryan Gil (24, Girona) openly declared that he wants to end his connection with his original team, Tottenham Hotspur.
On the 29th (Korea time), the British outlet 'Football London' reported, "Gil has made a clear verdict about his future at Tottenham. He has been talking about his future and has made it clear that he believes leaving Tottenham after four years is the best option."
Gil recently stated in an interview with local Spanish media that he has absolutely no intention of returning to Tottenham. Currently undergoing rehabilitation after leg surgery, he said, "I am focusing on recovering and returning as best as possible. I haven't been overly concerned about the future. My agent will let me know how things will unfold. But the best option for me is the non-consolidation with Tottenham."
However, he did not view Tottenham as bad karma. Gil emphasized, "I have no issues or negative feelings between us and Tottenham. Quite the opposite. Tottenham took a chance on me when I was young, and honestly, they treated me quite well. If I have to return there, I will focus on giving my best as always."
He added, "I remain calm. No one can say I am unprofessional. I have always trained well and have done what I needed to do. Therefore, whatever happens will happen. Let’s see where we are next year."
Currently playing on loan at Girona, Gil is in his third loan spell since joining Tottenham. The Spanish winger joined Tottenham in 2021 after leaving Sevilla. He gained much attention in La Liga for his unique left-foot dribbling that disrupts the timing of opposing defenses.
At that time, several teams were interested in Gil, but Tottenham won the recruitment competition by offering a cash deal of €25 million (approximately 40.9 billion won) along with Eric Lamela. The contract lasts until 2026. Considering that Lamela was in a position to be sold for a sufficient transfer fee, it was a bold investment for Tottenham.
However, contrary to expectations, Gil struggled to adapt to the rough Premier League (PL). He went on loan to Valencia in the latter half of 2021 to secure playing time and also spent the latter half of the 2022-2023 season on loan at Sevilla. Returned to his original team, Gil made significant contributions, helping Sevilla to win the UEFA Europa League (UEL).
The problem was that his performance did not translate at all in the PL. Gil returned to Tottenham last season but did not make any significant impact. Especially in the match against Manchester City, he wasted a golden opportunity while dribbling alone instead of passing, angering Son Heung-min. Gil raised his hands in a gesture of injustice at Son's strong reprimand, but it was clearly his misjudgment.
Ultimately, Gil was overlooked under manager Ange Postecoglou and did not start even once. He did not compensate for his physicality and managed to play only 200 minutes in 11 league matches last season. He had no attacking points. His overall record at Tottenham stands at 43 matches with 0 goals.
Gil returned to La Liga, donning the Girona jersey. He has been a key player this season, recording 25 league matches with 3 goals and 3 assists. However, he underwent surgery last month for a knee ligament and meniscus injury, leaving him out for the season. Currently, he is recovering on crutches.
Now, both Tottenham and Gil must choose their next future. The contract lasts until the summer of 2026, meaning there is only one year left once this season ends. For now, Gil has strongly expressed his desire to part ways with Tottenham, effectively notifying them of his separation.
It seems that Tottenham will have no choice but to bear a significant loss and dispose of Gil this upcoming summer. While Girona is considering a full transfer for Gil, it has been reported that they only want a low transfer fee. Even Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman known as 'the devil's negotiator,' is expected to have no way out.
