Could manager Ange Postecoglou continue his Premier League (PL) career even if he is dismissed from Tottenham Hotspur? Claims have surfaced that he could take over at promoted team Leeds United.
The British 'Express' reported on the 24th (Korean time) that "Leeds has five options to replace manager Daniel Farke as the board considers a new managerial appointment," listing five potential candidates to be the next manager of Leeds next season.
The media mentioned names such as José Mourinho, manager of Fenerbahçe, Kjetil Knutsen, manager of Bodø/Glimt, Thiago Motta, who was dismissed from Juventus, Michael Carrick, manager of Middlesbrough, and Postecoglou.
The Express noted that "Postecoglou is reported to have a low likelihood of managing Tottenham next season, regardless of his success in the UEFA Europa League (UEL). A dismal season marred by injuries, naive tactics, and key player condition issues has now reached an uncontrollable level."
The media added, "Postecoglou will be eager to restore his managerial reputation. Just a year ago, he almost led an inexperienced Tottenham team to the UEFA Champions League. Taking on a lower-tier team could be a good choice for Postecoglou, but if results plummet, Leeds may lack patience."
The Australian-born Postecoglou is likely to be dismissed at the end of this season. He took over Tottenham in the summer of 2023, succeeding Antonio Conte, who parted ways mid-season. Despite concerns about his lack of European experience, aside from Celtic in Scotland, he sparked a surge that took Tottenham to the top of the Premier League early in the season.
At that point, it seemed that Postecoglou's claimed 'attacking football' was shining. However, that did not last long. With monotonous attacking tactics and excessive game management, cracks began to emerge, and due to high-intensity training and play, injuries started to accumulate, leading to a collapse in the latter half of the season.
Nonetheless, Postecoglou did not lose his confidence. He boasted that he always won in his second year, and the Tottenham board invested a club-record transfer fee to sign striker Dominic Solanke. However, Tottenham fell into a more serious slump. Although they occasionally managed to win against strong teams, they repeatedly stumbled against weaker teams and failed to accumulate points.
A potentially historic humiliation for the club is possible. Tottenham recorded their 18th loss of the season with their defeat against Nottingham on the 22nd, making it the most losses since the 1993-1994 season (19 losses). If they lose two more of the remaining five matches, they will achieve a total of 20 losses in the league for the first time since the Premier League was established.
Ultimately, the Tottenham board also appeared to lose patience. Recently, the prominent British newspaper 'Telegraph' reported, "Postecoglou is likely to leave the team regardless of winning the UEL and qualifying for the UEFA Champions League (UCL). He is expected to depart from Tottenham irrespective of the outcome of the championships."
Postecoglou's last hope seemed to be winning the UEL. Tottenham has barely reached the semifinals of the tournament. The opponent in the semifinals is Bodø/Glimt from Norway. On paper, Tottenham has a significant advantage. However, even if he wins here, it indicates that Postecoglou has no future at Tottenham.
The media explained, "Postecoglou's team is expected to break the club record for most losses with 19 losses in the league, but they can still redeem this season by winning the UEL and qualifying for the next year's UCL. However, regardless of the outcome in the UEL, the likelihood of Postecoglou leaving Tottenham after the season is increasing, either by being eliminated from the UEL or through a mutual parting of ways."
Postecoglou also seems to sense that a separation is approaching. He consistently stated that he could not predict his future. After beating Eintracht Frankfurt to advance to the UEL semifinals, he remarked, "Unfortunately for most of you, you will have to bear with me for a while longer. You will have to be a little more patient," using bone-deep humor.
However, it appears that Postecoglou could remain in the Premier League even if he is dismissed from Tottenham. He has emerged as a candidate to be the next manager of Leeds, who are in the process of dismissing Farke despite their promotion.
Leeds is currently at the top of the English Championship but is contemplating a shocking separation from manager Farke. The British 'Daily Mail' reported, "Leeds is reviewing the dismissal of manager Farke," noting that despite leading the team back to the Premier League in two years, the club's hierarchy is questioning whether he is the right person to lead them to survival in the Premier League.
Manager Farke is regarded as one of the best managers in Championship history. He has led Norwich City and Leeds United to three promotions and has achieved over 90 points each season. This season, he has already secured 94 points with two matches remaining. He has ensured at least a second-place finish, confirming promotion.
However, it seems that the American ownership group '49ers Enterprises' has lost confidence in Farke. According to the Daily Mail, the issue lies in Farke's history of failure in the Premier League. He managed Norwich in the 2019-2020 season and finished last with only 21 points, and he was dismissed after just 11 matches the following year. Therefore, the club is considering sacking him as long as a replacement can be secured.
In this context, the Express argued that Postecoglou's aggressive tactics might fit well with Leeds. He has consistently adhered to attacking football based on a high defensive line and intense pressure throughout his coaching stints with Yokohama, the Australian national team, Celtic, and Tottenham.
The Express noted, "Postecoglou's style evokes memories of former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa's football." 'FourFourTwo' also stated, "Postecoglou aligns with Leeds' desire for a more established manager in the top tier. Leeds fans could once again enjoy a high-intensity style under him, reminiscent of Bielsa's football."
However, it remains uncertain whether Postecoglou, who collapsed due to a lack of tactical flexibility and a Plan B at Tottenham, can succeed with a much weaker Leeds. Like Bielsa, he could achieve good results but then collapse in an instant, leading to his dismissal.
