One of the candidates that Liverpool is considering to invigorate their attack for next season has emerged as a product of Manchester United (Man U).

Spanish outlet 'TodoPitchers' reported that on the 23rd (Korea time), Liverpool, led by coach Arne Slot, is interested in acquiring Mason Greenwood (24), an England native currently playing for Marseille.

Coach Slot believes there is a need to inject more vitality into the attack for next season. To this end, he has devised a strategy to acquire young and versatile talent. While Mohamed Salah remains in the attacking lineup, there is a high possibility that Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz will depart.

Greenwood has recorded 18 goals and 4 assists in 30 matches in Ligue 1 this season. His performance has attracted the attention of several European clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), despite being under contract with Marseille until the summer of 2029.

However, Marseille, which acquired Greenwood last summer for €30 million, does not want to sell. Coach Roberto De Zerbi has also expressed a desire for Greenwood to stay with the team.

However, Marseille has indicated that it could consider a significant offer amounting to €75 million (approximately 122 billion won). The reason for such a high transfer fee is that Greenwood's market value includes a sell-on clause amounting to 40-50%.

The sell-on clause stipulates that when club A transfers player B to another club, club B's former club or original club will receive an additional percentage of the transfer fee, as specified in the contract.

Ultimately, this also means that Liverpool is prepared to pay €75 million for Greenwood's acquisition. PSG has previously expressed a willingness to pay, so the battle for Greenwood will likely become a bidding war between Liverpool and PSG.

Greenwood was considered one of England's top prospects. He garnered attention by making his debut in the first team at the age of 17 under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Greenwood received high praise as a forward responsible for the future of both Manchester United and England.

However, Greenwood's situation changed when he was arrested in January 2022 on charges of raping and assaulting his girlfriend. The club temporarily suspended Greenwood's player eligibility, and fans demanded his expulsion from the club.

Ultimately, Greenwood was informed in the summer of 2023 of Manchester United's policy of not restoring him and was loaned to Getafe. Following his loan, Greenwood joined Marseille on a five-year contract in the summer of 2024.

Greenwood has recently changed his nationality from England to Jamaica. According to ESPN on the 18th, the Football Association (FA) of England has officially approved Greenwood's nationality change.

Greenwood was listed on Jamaica's Copa America roster in May last year and reportedly submitted documents in August to request a change of nationality to Jamaica.
